Good stuff, StatGeek!

This stat should settle the debate about which state school has the best basketball program (there has never been a debate when it comes to football):

point of record osu has 0 "national championships" they have 2 NCAA championships

Hard to properly gauge these rankings since some schools have spent a large portion of their history in weaker conferences (e.g. Southwest Conference), and West Virginia hails from the Big East, which most of us know is usually a stronger conference. Good read nonetheless though.

But WV has only been in the Big East in hoops for 17 years. Long enough to have some impact on their record, for sure, but the SW conference schools have been in the Big 12 just as long.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to compare and contrast which teams were harder to gauge in this all-time ranking. Just saying it's harder to appropriately rank the all-time basketball spots within this conference as opposed to doing the same in a couple other conferences, considering 5 of the current Big 12 programs--half of this current league--weren't affiliated with the Southwest Conference 20 years ago (i.e. OU, Ok. State, KU, K-State, WVU).

Stronger than what conference? Is the Big East stronger because more media members declare it stronger? I prefer to look at actual head to head competition and results to determine what conferences are strongest. I personally believe the Big East to be a good conference but I don't necessarily think it is any stronger than the ACC, Big Ten or Big XII.

Did you look at various stats ranging as far as 1995 (West Virginia's first year in the Big East) to reach your conclusion then?

Sure, the media fawning over the Big East can get old. But the league's depth, tough road atmospheres, and National Title winners are tough to ignore. The Big 12 has proven to be a legit basketball conference over the years, but the Big East has overall been tougher since 1995.

I did not actually look at anything. I think a person could make an argument that supports the Big XII, Big East, Big Ten or ACC being the top conference. They all have strengths and weaknesses. My only point is that I percieve OU fans as sometimes defering to other conferences and I think we have the best conference. I may be biased or even wrong but I am not about to concede the argument.

I would acknowledge that Uconn and Syracuse have won titles but I don't agree that the depth of the Big East or the raod atmosphere are any better than the Big XII. I am pretty sure that OU, OSU, KU, Missouri, Baylor, Texas and A&M have all made the Great 8 in recent years. I can't speak to the accomplishments or lack of accomplishments of the Big East but I suspect it would not be any better. I also know that ISU, KSU and Tech have all made the tournament in the relatively recent past. It has been a few years for Tech but I believe Bob Knight took them to the tournament.

I did not mean for my comments to be an insult towards you. I just hope to influence OU fans (particularly those that just read) to recognize that we have a strong program and a strong confernece.

So you disagreed with my opinion without looking up any results?

Not offended at all, and I agree that the Big 12 has been a strong conference. In fact, I've supported that notion quite a bit on here when others have said it's a weak basketball conference.

I just think from a cumulative standpoint, the Big East has been a more competitive conference over nearly 20 years.

I don't understand OU fans that won't give credit where credit is do. The SEC is superior in football, but I'm pretty confident in the Big 12 being the second best conference. The Big East is superior in basketball, but the Big 12 certainly matches up with the other conferences, top to bottom, in recent years. Nothing wrong with that.

This post make me sad for the current state of our programs.

I miss the 1990s/2000s for Bedlam basketball...
