I know that this is a long shot, and it may sound crazy, but could we bring back Billy Tubbs to help save the program? I know that he is 75-years old, but maybe we could give him a 2-year contract, and let him hire his hand-picked successor as an assistant who could to take over after two years. In my opinion, this would at least generate some interest in our program, and if we are going to get blown out like today at home, maybe we could at least be fun to watch? I took my 12-year old son who is a basketball fanatic to the All-College game against Cincy, and even though we were in town, he refused to go with me to the game today as he said that they were boring to watch. I just feel that we have to do something to save this program, as I am crushed by how bad we are right now. :billy

lol.

He wouldn't be able to recruit these days IMO.

He would have Newell running up and down the court pouring in 20 a game.

I would like to see our next coach have a lot more experience if that's the way we go. I think it's getting harder and harder to keep Capel as the coach as badly as we get humiliated.

It's never going to happen, but I'm not going to lie, I would love it for entertainment purposes alone. Honestly, he is probably the only coach on the planet who OU could hire and the LNC would be full for a season-opener against Whoever Tech. I don't think even Phil Jackson would create the kind of enthusiasm Tubbs would.

But yeah, not going to happen.

I'm as big a Billy Tubbs fan as you can find, but this is a clown post.

This is about as good of an idea as bringing Switzer back after Blake would have been.

Hopefully all the rats who chased Switzer out would have been gone after Gibbs was let go and Switzer would have been back them. After Blake, absolutely.
Tubbs as a caretaker, why not.

I've heard Billy state several times that he doesn't have the energy to coach at the D1 level any more.

He would have Newell running up and down the court pouring in 20 a game.

20 turnovers a game?

Actually, he probably would have less turnovers if the defense were on their heels worried about getting back on defense, instead of up in his face while he tries to dribble in the half-court set.

Thats the thing. Billy would see that Newell's strength is his speed and not running a half-court set. He would use Newell's speed to put pressure on the opposing team's defense and would push the ball with every opprotunity he got. Wasn't Prince Fowler kind of the same mold as Newell (I am not 100% on this, this was a little early for me) and thats why he transfered with Billy to TCU?

And I wasn't saying that the answer to the team's problems are because Newell isn't playing. I do think Newell has some assets that are not being utilized. I think Newell could average at least 8-10 ppg this year just by pushing the ball and getting easy buckets.

Billy didn't do much after he left OU....why hire him again. That ship sailed LONG ago. I LOVED Billy back in the day....but let him stay in the media booth.

It's early in the year..but this post has locked at least a Top 5 for "Dumbest Post of the Year" award for 2011.

SOme of you are simply unbelievable.

I doubt Tubbs even wants the job. It is a lot of work. I suspect the reason he came back to Norman is to be around his grand children. Calling some basketball games is entertainment for him not a job. Being the head coach at OU is a full time job. Capel probably puts in 60+ a week. Tubbs doesn't need the money and probably doesn't want the stress.

Finally, even if he has some interest, why take the risk of tarnishing his reputation. Even though he quit, OU fans still love the guy. Why risk that?

I am not touting Billy for the job. Rather showing that outside of Billy's prime, he would still be head and shoulders above what we have now.
