This story highlights a couple of things that are terribly wrong with out society today.

First, we have government at all levels that thinks policies are more important than people and reality. The government refuses to act rationally and think through policies and their application to a give situation. The attendance policy has zero application in this situation yet it is policy so the principal enforces it regardless of its impact on this kid. This is a major problem but it is actually the lesser evil in this story.

Second, our government at all levels lies. The Superintendent is lying. The principal told the kid and his parents he couldn't play. This school district just sent a message to kids that it is acceptable to lie. Society will reinforce that message because nothing will happen to the Superintendent that lied.
