Disgusting performance thus far on the defensive boards. They are getting over 50% of the offensive rebounds!!

I know we're not the most talented team but not blocking out is inexcusable. Pathetic coaching and execution!!

Final Rebounding Stats
Off ... Def ... Total

OU .... 13 ... 27 ... 40
WVU .. 17 ... 22 ... 39

Go easy on Boca. At the time of his post, WVU was beating us on the boards by at least 10 as they were getting offensive rebound after offensive rebound. Our Sooners finally started hitting the boards after the under 12:00 time out.

With that said, this is why I don't like to post my frustrations when the outcome is still in doubt. :)

Bingo!

Posting frustration is one thing. Posting joy (at least every now and then) is another thing.

That stat was a little misleading though, because twice, I think, they had possessions where their bigs batted the ball around a bit under the boards, and probably got 3-4 offensive rebounds on each possession. So it's not really like we gave up offensive rebounds 7-10 times down the court.

We are giving up heigth and bulk (In M'Baye's case) so I am happy when we get more than the other team.

If some of our posters were coaching the team we would have players being pulled on every whistle and after each game 3 or 4 scholarships would be pulled.

A lot of their offensive boards were not caused by our poor positioning but by them raking at the ball or pushing us under the basket as the ball was coming off the rim. A lot of this is just life on the road and some of it is lack of size.

Then there was at least one imaginary tie-up where they raked at the ball and never got it.

I didn't have a problem with rebounding position though.

At the time of my post they were beating us 20-10 on the boards & had more offensive rebounds than we did defensive. It was a glaring issue.

Read the post game quotes from Kruger & Osby. They both say the most important part of the game was us stopping WVU from getting so many 2nd chance shots & every loose ball which they were in the middle of the game.

I imagine the content of my post was said with great emphasis at halftime.

True that.

It was good to see the OU team adjust, and improve on the boards as the game went on.

Team Leaders ... Rebounds per game

Osby ...... 6.5
M'Baye ... 5.8
Buddy .... 4.4
Cam ....... 3.2
Pledger ... 3.1

It is interesting that Buddy is the top rebounding guard. He always seems to be around the ball.

Buddy is a player. He has a nose for the ball and a swagger once he gets it. He just looks the part of a complete player.

For those who have seen Spangler play, what are the chances he comes close to replacing Osby next year? That's my hope.

From what I saw in the preseason scrimmages, Spangler is a bull. He looked very strong on defense and on the boards. He was also solid in the paint offensively. He played very aggressively. He does not like the other guy to make a layup, so he did get called for fouls.

Also, C.J. Cole is better than most may know. He was redshirted this year for a reason. He will be on scholarship next year for a reason.

Hopefully, some of these guys can play:

D.J. Bennett .. 6-8, 210 .. Chicago / Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College
Dominique Elliott .. 6-8, 240 .. Savannah, Ga. / Trinity Valley (Texas) CC
Keshaun Hamilton ... 6-10, 270 ... Palatka, Fla. / Labette (Kan.) CC

Plus, Amath M'Baye will likely improve for his senior season next year.

I think we will be OK in the post next season.

This Huggins postgame quote pretty much tells the whole story. When any Huggins coached team gets "out-toughed," that's quite a compliment to how hard our kids played in the second half. Tough, hardnosed defense and refusing to give up on loose balls and rebounds can win a lot of games this season, if it develops into a consistent trademark for this team.

West Virginia Head Coach Bob Huggins:

On the difference between the first and second half:
"We had some pretty good shots and we didn't make them. They came down and isolated their bigs and time after time, they isolated their bigs and when they didn't score, they passed it to someone else who scored it seemingly. We went 2-3 zone to try and change the tempo a little bit. I know they had five consecutive misses on first shots and they had five consecutive offensive rebounds. They just outmanned us. They were just tougher on the glass then we were."

Entering yesterday's game, WV was ranked 16th (third in the Big 12) in offensive rebounding, so you're certainly right that Huggins' comments are telling.

I actually think Spangler is the best rebounder on the team. He won't replace everything Ro does but he will rebound at a better clip.

That's great news. Osby is a little undersized but has pretty good athleticism and a solid stroke. I've never seen Spangler play but from what I read that was supposed to be the book on him too.
