Bob Barry's last season

I haven't been one of Bob's biggest admirers the last few years but I do tip my hat to him for the fine career he has had. Now, looking forward to a new guy coming in to take over.

Should have happened years ago, but he has been a stalwart fan. I suppose Carpenter will take ovewr and I'm not thrilled at that. I wish he would describe THEN editorialize. Brinkley is better all around.

I've long advocated for Bob to shift into the role of secondary color man. He still has very much to offer, but has not been up to the demands of doing play by play for a long time.

I shudder to think of us going with Carpenter, though. His sing-song delivery is maddening. He sounds like a pre-school teacher talking down to a bunch of three-year-olds. I hear him calling Nationals games on television sometimes, and he's just not very good.

I like Carpenter. He doesn't make near as many mistakes as Bob Barry does.

Virtually anyone Joe C. might hire will make significantly fewer mistakes than does BB Sr.

This is a big time gig. We don't need to settle for a Bob Carpenter type.

Sad to hear on Bob, he has been an big part of Sooner Basketball recently. I hope this team gives him a good year for his Swan Song and that he enjoys retirement.

If I remember correctly, Carpenter has done play by play for Major League Baseball teams, which should qualify as 'big time'. Who do you consider to be more 'big time'?

Carpenter is the play-by-play guy for the Washington Nationals, so it's safe to say he's of sufficient stature to work for OU, although it's seriously debatable whether or not the Naitonals are really a Major League Baseball team.

I do very much agree with j2d2 that Carpenter's tendency to editorialize ruins it for me. He drives me crazy on the Sooner Sports Network broadcasts when he steps all over Spoonhour's lines pontificating about this or that.

Who are the other possibilities? Cooperstein?

I'm fully aware that Bob Carpenter works for the Nationals. I believe he was also let go by the St. Louis Cardinals as well as ESPN (when he used to work college basketball games for them). He has had good jobs, but that doesn't make him big time to me.

What I meant by "Bob Carpenter type" wasn't based on stature, previous jobs, or what he does now. I simply meant he's not very good IMO. I find him incredibly boring and don't want him doing OU games on the radio.

People all over the country will want a shot at this gig. I say open the competition up and see what is out there, whether they are known quantities at this point or not. We don't need to settle for someone just because of a previous relationship there.

Dave Hunziker....

"HOLY GUACAMOLE, TOUCHDOWN OKLAHOMA!"

Ugh.

Bob Barry is a very nice man. Funny, too. I played in a golf tournament with him several years ago and enjoyed every minute of it. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about listening to him on the radio the past few seasons.

That said, I appreciate his contributions to OU basketball and football, and I wish him nothing but the best in the future. Thank you, Bob!

While it is certainly time for him to step down, I am a huge BBS fan. During my time down in the student section he has always been nothing but supportive and kind to me and the capelables.

Hope you go out with two great sooner seasons Bob!

Bob Barry was always good to us down on the floor. While his time has definatley come, he will be missed

For many who grew up in small towns, the voice of the local football team was a part of the color and pageantry of the program. Whether Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, or Oklahoma, the voice of the program was the only contact that many in small town America had with their favorite team. Some had never seen the campus. Their children hoped to be able to attend their cherished university. But, the sports announcer, especially the football announcer, was their only contact. When you turned the radio dial, you knew you had found the right place when you heard the local announcer. He was your announcer, the voice that you identified with.

For many, that has been Bob Berry. Perhaps, times have changed. Perhaps, cable TV and the superhighways have made the college more accessible. I wonder if the person who has never made it from Gotebo, Bowlegs, or Talihina to Norman will miss Bob Berry? How will they feel about a new voice. Mistakes or not, he was OU to so many.
