Bookout advances at Olympic trials

I was always amazed that he could excel in two totally different sports. Some two-sport athletes make sense. But basketball to shot is a pretty radical change.

The article didn't mention what Bookout would actually need to do to make the Olympic team. Odd, as I imagine a lot of readers would want to know that. If yesterday's numbers hold for the guys above him, he'll basically need to add about four feet. Not sure if he's ever thrown over 65-5, but that was the third best mark on Saturday (only the top three go).

He was an extremely talented high school pitcher too. Not too surprising given his elite shot put ability.

With his size, strength and athleticism, I'm surprised he wasn't groomed as a left tackle from the time he was about 14.

Agreed. He would have been a beast with his size and footwork.

I love KB. I met him at the fair a few yrs back, and he acted happier to meet me, than I was to meet him. Very humble, well spoken young man who always seemed thrilled and privileged to be a Sooner.....

He actually excelled at three sports. Kevin could have easily played college baseball like his brothers.

Look at him today and he's still a beast :)

Alas, his bid for London 2012 fell short. He threw about 62.5 and the lowest Olympic qualifier threw just shy of 70.

I am not sure what his personal best is, so not sure if this was his usual throwing distance or if he was having a bad day. About 70 ft seems to be what qualifying distance usually is.

The third place qualifier (Christian Cantwell... Mizzou alum) won the silver in 2008, and his throws in the qualifying rounds were actually farther.

Really tough to make it to the Olympics in the shot for an American. We've got some really elite guys in that sport.

bookout has never been at the top of the shot put ... he has always been just 1 level back ..

he should have stuck to baseball
