There is more than one way to look at the “break-down” of a college basketball team’s roster. Many college teams do not really have a “true center” on their roster, much less two. When Kelvin Sampson was here and talked to the Tip-In Club, he would often break-down his roster into three categories: (1) Combo/Point Guards; (2) Wings; (3) Post Players. Combo Guards are the primary ball-handlers and have the capacity to play the point guard position.
Obviously, there is some overlap in these categories, as some players are “Versatile” or “Tweeners” and can move from one category to another. Combo Guards Jordan Woodard and Kameron McGusty can play the point and the wing, while Juco Transfer Darrion Strong has been described as a pure point guard. In the break-down below, Dante Buford is listed as a post player, but he can stretch-out to the wing. And, so on.
FWIW, here is another way of looking at the break-down of the roster.
Combo Guards
> Senior Jordan Woodard (6-0; 187)
> Junior Darrion Strong (6-1; 185)
> Freshman Kameron McGusty (6-5; 170)
> Freshman Jordan Shepherd (6-2; 175)
Wings
> Sophomore Christian James (6-4; 218)
> Sophomore Rashard Odomes (6-6; 200)
> Sophomore Austin Grandstaff (6-5; 200)
Post Players
> Junior Khadeem Lattin (6-9; 208)
> Sophomore Dante Buford (6-7; 221)
> Sophomore Jamuni McNeace (6-10; 215)
> Freshman Kristian Doolittle (6-7; 215)
> Freshman Matt Freeman (6-9; 220)
Or, looking at it another way:
7 ... players available at the 1, 2, and 3 positions.
5 ... players available at the 4 and 5 positions.
