Kevin Ollie
i would have a hard time believing that the thunder would roll with another rookie coach
That's why it will be Ollie. I think they realize signing Westbrook to an extension is going to be tough, so they have to do what they can to keep KD.Me, too. But I wouldn't rule that out as a possibility if the Thunder decision makers believe Ollie is a good choice. One thing in his favor (assuming what has been reported is true) is that he could be instrumental in keeping Durant in OKC when it's time to renew his contract.
I'm not sure I would buy the relationship part of it all, in the end. I don't think he would be gone without the big 2 signing off, regardless of what the organization will say. Usually when all you hear is glowing remarks about how close everyone is, it isn't true. This will be interesting. A new coach will likely be better than Brooks on X's and O's, choosing best rotations... but will he be better at connection with players, motivating players, developing relationships? That's probably the harder part, to be honest.
This is a big risk.
I agree that D'Antoni doesn't get as much credit as he deserves, but the bolded statement makes him the wrong guy for this job.Would love to see D'Antoni coach that talent. People like to discredit him because he didn't win a title but he revolutionized the game. Popovich, McHale, Budenholzer & Kerr are all basically running his system now.
Having said that this move is all about Kevin Durant and his impending free agency. D'Antoni can be a little surly. Coach K? Does he have an NBA run in him? That would be awesome too.
Agreed. This will be interesting. A new coach will likely be better than Brooks on X's and O's, choosing best rotations... but will he be better at connection with players, motivating players, developing relationships? That's probably the harder part, to be honest.

Alvin Gentry could be a good hire. He's a great coach with an amazing personality. He's never been in the best situation but when he had a decent roster he got the Suns to the conference finals in 2010. Then he's been on the bench with Doc and was immediately snapped up by Kerr when he was hired by the Warriors.
Not sure you could find a guy better liked and respected around the league.
I don't think Thunder can keep KD without Russ. I think they both stay or both go. I just can't see KD signing up to play by himself in OKC. He's not winning a title with Serge as his second best guy. Not when teh best players in the league keep teaming up.
If RW leaves, serge will not be the second best player. Thunder would have lots of cash to spend with freeing up his contract adn with the new salary cap
What big time free agent is coming to OKC? There isn't any LeBron James out there who wants to come home to OKC. You'd have to find an elite player willing to go to OKC, and to play second banana. Not sure who exactly that would be. I guess Thunder could try to get a guy under contract elsewhere who isn't happy where he is.

"He's a guy who is well-known and well-liked around the league, respected by players, even guys who haven't played for him," ESPN.com's Amin Elhassan wrote. "To me, if we're talking about getting an established guy who can take [OKC] to the next level, it's Alvin Gentry."
He's too good to be an assistant coach. And everyone knows it.
"I hate to say it but there's a high chance we lose him in the offseason because he's just too talented of a coach to not be head coaching," Warriors center Bogut said, per CBS Sports' James Herbert.
