Calvin Newell update

Compared his game to Westbrook but is visiting Marshall and Niagra...

Maybe Capel sees something in him others missed...

Is this offer list legit?

In my googling I found a couple of threads from the WVU Scout boards regarding Newell, and based on what their fans are saying it sounds like Huggins' interest is legitimate.

If OU can't compete with Niagra we are in serious trouble!I am an avid OU fan,but seriously the basketball situation is comical at best...Go Sooners!!!

Told Hale that he has visited OU, Baylor and Niagara. Said we are tied with Niagara right now and is visiting Marshall this weekend. Compared his game to Russell Westbrook. More here if you are a subscriber over there...............

Tied with NIAGARA? How far have we fallen in one miserable year?

Let's see.......go to Oklahoma, play in the Big XII, have a chance to start, play against high level competition every night....or go to Niagara. Not knocking Niagara...but there shouldn't even be a comparison.

Oh well.......there aren't a lot of people to blame for the problems we are having....I don't want Capel fired but I sure hope he gets things changed around quickly.

Niagra could have a coach that has a relationship with the kid or something. McCallum chose Detroit over just about every program in the country. Just saying, don't think that you can say that OU being "tied" with Niagra has anything to do with the state of either program.

I am a HUGE OU homer but to say that chosing OU b-baqll over Niagra b-ball for this kid is a no brainer is arrogant bordering on hubris.I don't even know this kid but I can give you several reasons why he could choose Niagra - 1) It is a lot closer to his home(pa.),2) basketball is king at Niagra, 3) Niagra has benn to THE DANCE as well 4) Strong academics 5) Niagra is NOT under NCAA investigation. 6) Niagra has been recruiting him for a while and OU just jumped on board. In fact I just checked this board's prospect list and Newell STILL isn't there.

I trust Jeff is going to do his best to bring in talent this period but the deck is HEAVILY stacked against him.

Hey mods; please delete the above post. It makes way too much sense to appear on this board.

BUT...my post was more the the fact that how far has it come that we are competing with MID-MAJOR programs for players. We are OU...not Virginia Commonwealth.

we should be competing with the Kentucky's, Kansas', OSU's, UT's, Arkansas' of the world....not the Niagara's, Old Dominion's, Appalachian State's, etc for players.

just my opinion and I KNOW everyone doesn't agree with me....and that is cool. I'm just saying how I feel.

You guys are missing the fact that he also visited Baylor and much preferred OU. So it's not just Niagra.

Everyone is so good at focusing on the negative.

It happens. Sometimes a player would rather attend a smaller school close to home than travel half-way across the country.

It has even happened to our football team. About 10 years ago, we lost a RB from Arkansas who chose Arkansas State over OU. His name was Jonathan Adams and he said at the time that OU was too big. He needed a small school so he could stay out of trouble and stay in class. Had he come to OU he would have won an NC, instead he chose Arky State and probably only won 10 games in the 4 years he played.

Also, the fact we won't be on TV much is going to hurt our chances to sign kids from 1000 miles away. Why not go to Niagara where your family can come to see you and watch you play most games, whereas at OU his family would maybe get to watch him play a few times at most and to do that they would need the full court package.

I've been very critical of Capel, but I can't blame him completely if Newell or some other kid chooses Niagara because college isn't just about where a kid can play on a bigger stage. A lot of other factors weigh into the decision, too.

Isn't WVU after him, too? So OU is tied with Niagra, but ahead of Baylor and WVU? I guess Baylor and West Virginia should have a melt down since they are losing to a low major school.

Yeah! The circumstances are exactly the same! NOT.

Do you see what I did there? I added "not" at the end, capitalized. Because West Virginia and Baylor are coming off excellent seasons. And presumably have more than six scholarship players prepared to play next year.

A voice of reason. Interesting points.
