Can anyone summarize OU's recruiting situation for me?

I know the information's out there, but I don't feel like figuring out myself what's pre-Kruger and what's current.

What's the scholarship situation look like for 2012, and who are the main targets to fill those spots?

I'm starting to get a good handle on where Haith is headed with all the open spots at Mizzou, but there are still a few guys where it's not clear whether we're recruiting a guy still or not.

Right now OU is focusing on a many of the best available big men prospects. 6
'11 Prince Ibeh of the Dallas area, 6'11 Willie Cauley from Topeka, Waverly Austin the juco prospect from California, and Kaylen Shane the post player from Chicago. There top targets at guard are 6'1 J-Mychal Reese of Bryan Texas, 6'4 Marcus Smart of Flower Mound Texas, Eddie Alcantara of Chicago, Jelon Hornbeak of Dallas, and Archie Goodwin of Arkansas, just to name a few. I wouldn't be suprised to see James Woodard of Edmond continue to creep up the list of potential signees.

They may be more aggressively recruiting 2013 prospects as they have targeted Jordan Woodard of Edmond Memorial as there top pg prospect. Also 6'4 Juwan Parker of Tulsa, 6'1 Connor Frankcamp of Wichita, 6'4 Matt Jones of Dallas, Tyrell and Tyree Robinson of San Diego, 6'9 Austin Colbert of New Jersey, 6'1 Kendall Harris of Dallas, 6'4 Allerik Freeman of North Carolina Julius Randle would be the ulimate target but the competition is steep.

A couple questions:

How many scholarships does OU have open for 2012 as of now?

Who on that list does OU have a realistic shot at landing (I see one that's an obvious reach)?

Two currently and one more when C J graduates. It was reported on this board that the Juco kid from Palm Beach St. has been offered. If he accepts, and he would be a good get if he does. It would be back to 2 for 2012. I don't want to come across as critical of Kruger because I'm certainly not. He just doesn't have a history of signing elite recruits. It will never be a continious parade of elite one and dones like Texas and others. In the past he has built programs with transfers and 3 and 4 star types that will be in the program for the duration. That seems to be his way and it works for him. I hope the fans don't get too balled up when the super hyped highlight reel types don't all find their way to Norman.

These are just a few of the targets to my understanding. I don't know if the coaches feel any of these kids are reaches. They definetely are communicating with most of these guys as much as possible.

To build on what's been said 2012 will be a small class. It depends on what happens with the Tiny situation. I think it is expected that OU will lose a ship due to that which means OU will only bring in 2 kids unless some players transfer out.

In 2012 it seems that one spot no matter what is going to go to a Big. I think a prep big is the preference as it will be hard to convince a high quality juco big to be a reserve his first year in.

Since OU is only losing 1 player (C.J. Washington) in 2012, the players they bring in the 2012 class will be more about the future then immediate help.

I think a player like Prince Ibeh would be ideal for the post spot, he would play some spot minutes a freshman and be given time to develop before being thrown into the fire in 2013. Ibeh would be OU's best shot blocker since Longar (maybe even since Brown), he's a legit 6'10 and is already 230 or so with the frame to handle more. I've seen him a couple times this spring and while he's raw offensively he runs the floor well and understands how to protect the rim on defense.

At the guard spot its a little murky at where they're going. Most names that are listing OU in 2012 are bigs but I think it will be hard to take two bigs in the same class.

The top 2012 guard names are
Marcus Smart
J-Mcyhael Reese
Eddie Alcantara
Phil Forte
Archie Goodwin
Jordan Mason
Jelon Hornbeak
James Woodard
Nino Jackson

Goodwin and Reese seem like reaches to be honest. Goodwin is probably staying in the SEC and Reese has long been rumored to favor Kansas. Now his dad is likely to get a coaching job at A&M (maybe even Tech). So I doubt if OU will be able to get in on him.

After that you're looking at Alcantara (no idea), and the four Texas guards.

Forte is a little bit of a reach as if OU is going to go with a smaller combo guard I think it would make more since to wait a year and get Stevie Clark.

I dont know much about the recruitment of Hornbeak and Mason but they're two North Texas guards that are both a little under the radar (at least it seems that way).

Smart is of course on my favorite recruits to watch (been that way since 2009), he's a guy OU will be going head to head with big names for so that hurts the chances. But he seems like the type of kid who doesn't get as caught up in the prestigious aspect of a school, he would rather go ball. OU's biggest help is the fact that they're close to home and they're recruiting his teammate and good friend Phil Forte.

Then you have the local kid James Woodard, I get the feeling his recruitment will end up a lot like Josh Ricahardson's just did. Both are grounded kids who will wait it out and most likely become hot names in the spring signing period. His recruitment should be very interesting to watch, Tennessee could be a player due to Martin now being there.

On Nino, who knows. I could see his scenario playing out a bunch of different ways.

With the three ships I see something like one post, a wing and a guard. I think they would bring in two posts if they find two they like and both want to come.

I'll make a post about Stevie and 2013 a little later tonight.

Goodwin's the one I was referring to above as an obvious reach. For once in my life, I'm rooting for Calipari (anything to keep him away from kansas or Anderson... I'm not going to hold a grudge against Anderson forever, but I don't want to see him land a bunch of studs he was once recruiting to Mizzou).

Kruger's going to have his work cut out for him coaching up what he's got at OU with so little room to bring in his own reinforcements.

Sam, has any high major besides us offered Forte? With our scholarship situation, I really don't understand that offer.

Why wouldn't we take the scholarship hit this year? Or do you think we will lose one scholly for two years?

Now about Mr. Julius Randle. Some have mentioned that he was only interested in the program because of Capel. Is this the case or have I been misinformed? I admit I too have been lost in all of the Kruger/Capel recruiting.

Just finished up interviewing Julius yesterday. Keep checking this week to get his take on his recruitment.

For recruiting fans, 2013 should be one of the more entertaining classes to follow recently.

First a look at the core of the 2013 roster to be built around.

Seniors
SG Calvin Newell (he could potentially see some time at point by then)
SF Cameron Clark
SF/PF Tyler Neal
PF Amath Mbaye

Juniors
None (Unless a transfer or something happens)

Sophomores
Guard of some kind in the 2012 class
Post from the 2012 class

Note: In this scenario I'm expecting a scholarship loss due to the Tiny Gallon issues.

Now for the subplots of the 2013 class, its a little bit of a perfect storm.

1. A lot of scholarships to fill. Osby, Blair, Fitz, Pledger, Grooms and Arent are all scheduled to play their last season then. With 6 open ships OU is looking to sign a lot of kids, this class could very well make or break the Lon Kruger era.

2. A talented in state class. This is going to be one of the better classes in Oklahoma in recent memory. There are potentially 4 players who could end up in the Rivals 150 rankings. That means to fill many of those ships OU doesn't have to go far to get some quality kids.

3. Texas is also loaded with talent. Julius Randle, Matt Jones, Keith Fraizer, Marcus Foster, Kendall Harris and Jordan Mickey are all North Texas kids who should end up high major. Thats not even counting the Houston area headlined with the Harrison twins.

4. Abd will love this, OU needs to land a juco or two in this class from the way I look at it. Bringing in 6 freshmen at the same time is just plain risky. A juco big and juco point/combo guard should be on the OU list in 2013. This is a also a good time to recruit jucos as I hate trying to fill spots with them late. Target some early, sell the playing time aspect and get the cream of the crop. Dont settle for some kids when scrambling in April.

I am sure there are some more intriguing sub plots in 2013 but I can't think of them right now at 2:00 AM.

The 2013 class will likely have a make up like this.

2: Points/Combos (With at least one being a true point, that the staff believes is ready to start since OU is losing two points)
1: 2/3 Wing/Guard type
2: Posts
1: best available

As fair as the local kids.

Jordan Woodard and Stevie Clark both fit the point/combo guard type. The one draw back with Stevie is I'm not sure if he'll ever be a true point. He could be a very interesting weapon to have at the college level for 4 years as the second he steps on the floor, he stretches the floor so much. He's a weapon, thats his main value right now.

Now Jordan, there isn't a kid in the state I'm more sold on right now. If he grows to the same height as his older brother (6'3) its over. I'm not playing around, its over. There wont be anyone in the state who will able to check him. He grows a few more inches and his shot gets more consistent it will be unfair at the high school level.

I saw this kid drop 20 straight to finish out a game in the EYBL circuit He hit 3 after 3 vs the New York Gauchos while going to the line a ridiculous amount of times in the final 3 minutes of game. I was sold on him as a Big 12 level point before his high school season ended, but seeing the scoring potential he flashed, oh me oh my, he really could be something special.

Another amazing thing about him for me right now is the fact that he's so young for his age. I've been told he's still 15, and wont be 16 till this fall. In this day and age with prep schools he's the same age as many 2014 prospects but is in the class of 2013. He's only 15, and he's only going to get better, he's such a humble kid too. Before the past couple months he had been under the radar when compared to Parker and Clark. If he stays humble as he starts getting hyped up it really means a lot to his grounded personality.

I think Jordan will be the next McDonald All American from Oklahoma.

Juwan Parker fits the mold of the wing prospect who can play the 2 or the 3. Off the top of my head I believed he dropped 16 a game this year with Booker T, I think over the next two seasons he should be in the 20+ range and one of the top scorers in the state. His biggest drawback is that he might not have the natural quickness to beat a ton of people off the dribble. He is a good enough of a shooter to make up for that and he has good lift on his vert.

Shaq Morris is the fourth possible high major kid in the state. He is 6'7 but built like a bull and has a lot of natural strength. He also posses a soft touch around the rim. The knock on him recently has been not possessing the best work ethic in the weight room. If he gets committed in a college level weight room he would mature into one of the strongest players in a high major conference. Also through the grapevine I heard thism he impressed in his time on campus Monday, he might become an OU priority soon.

There are a few more kids like Zach Rodgers (Holland Hall), Don Simmons (Edison) and Nico Meadows (Capitol Hill) who I think could sneak into the Big 12 level.

They do really like Stevie Clark. He is a big time shooter. He probably isn't a point guard.
You could get Woodward, Clark and Parker and the 1-3 positions would be covered.

I, for one, hope Coach Kruger doesn't sign a bunch of "one-and-done" players. I don't believe that's the way to build a program (though it seems to have worked well for Calipari). I'll take the 3 and 4-star kids every time; players that will be here for at least three years.

JMHO.

Capel's problem isnt that he got some one and done players, but that he got some some one and dumb players. But I do agree with you and I like the fact that Capel is looking at kids like Marcus Smart, a difference maker, but a four year player.

Yes and no.

You can get away with a few dumb one-and-dones, IF your other players are sticking around and contributing at a decent level. Guys like Early. Guys like Neysmith. Guys like Maze. Guys like Thompson/Allen/Washington.

Too many busts with both the studs and the role players to be sucessful.
