Capel deserves a second chance >>> Ft. Worth Star-Telegram

My guess is many of those clamoring for his dismissal were also among the un-oiled who last fall advocated firing Bob Stoops.

I stopped reading at this freaking lie! NOBODY wanted Bob Stoops' head in 2009-2010! Absolutely, NOBODY!!!

Who is the idiot that wrote this?

At OUI there were some indeed suggesting to replace Stoops, I kid you not.

You must have been under a rock.

One of them posts here.

Nice to read something level-headed for a change. Now back to the meltdown, everyone.

As to the article itself, that guy pretty much neiled it, and the proverb that Capel is quoted as saying is one of my favorite.

As to people wanting Bob Stoops head, the most vocal and repetitive "message board" poster having that viewpoint is indeed a poster on this board.

anybody who said Stoops should go is a just a total idiot

I think what he meant was that no rational, normal OU football fan wanted Stoops fired. There are plently of bandwagon fans who have no idea what it was like in Norman in the mid-90s.

anybody who said Stoops should go is a just a total idiot

And not just last season.

If at any point you said, or even thought, that Stoops should go, you are a moron of epic proportions and for the rest of your life, anything you say or think should be taken with a grain salt. Imbecile would be what you are.

Please someone explain to me alittle better then this article did why Capel deserves a second chance aside from the fact that it would be to hard to bring in a great coach this late and have him be successfull?

That article was a pretty comprehensive list of SOLID reasons. Maybe you could share your comprehensive list of reasons why he should be fired after one bad season and while you are at it, name off a few candidates that you think would be better for the job [oh, and also WANT the job].

If you REALLY need another reason, try this one:

By firing Jeff Capel a little over a year after he made it to the Elite Eight, a coach that is more likely to do a better job that Jeff Capel is also more likely to be scared off by what he would perceive as a job where you are always on the hot seat. In short, by canning him now, your list of potential candidates would shrink significantly.

I agree and I think you make some valid statements. My question is when does it come to the point that he needs to be fired?
Because the way I see it now is that we are probably going to have another loosing record this year...so thats two in a row...then unless he signs some freaking studs for the following year we are prob going to miss the tourny again...and keep in mind that most posters on here say freshman cant come in and carry the team, and it looks like may need them to in a couple years if we want any chance of making the tourny

So my question just is when do we let him go or what needs to happen to let him go? Because I dont see anything changing soon, so my fear is that we will split ways with capel in a few years when we could have done it asap and let whomever start building his program either a year early or two years early

If we split with Capel now, we PROBABLY lose our recruiting class like we did with Sampson, which is shaping up to be a pretty descent class: CAM and TJ are considered by many to be among the best prospects both in the region and nationally, Neal was the POY in the state, and Washington was a 1st JUCO AA.

We still have a few scholarships to give, and I feel pretty good about our chances in picking up some good prospects. In addition to losing guys that are coming in next year, we also will likely lose Richard Peters for the 2011 class and any momentum we may have on other kids that are high on OU for the 2011 class. This is a bigger deal than you think...go back and look at when Clark and Taylor comitted to OU (April and September of last year).

Now, I think that everybody understands that next year is going to probably below .500 BUT you have to take into account the future in the decisions you make now. Capel is absolutely going to be the Coach next season, it may be tough, but by 2012, he has a pretty solid foundation "as is":

Washington JCAA (Sr.)
Pledger**** (Jr.)
Fitz.**** (Jr.)
Cam**** (So.)
TJ**** (So.)
NEAL OPOY (So.)
Peters**** (Fr.)

If you bring in a new guy, it is likely that not ONE of these players will be playing for OU by 2012 except for maybe Neal and Washington. This is the reason why I think that some of the more thoughtful posters are saying that it needs to be NCAA or bust for Capel in 2012. The program has a better chance of retaining these guys if the move is made in 2012 than it does in 2010. JMHO, and another reason (not set out in the article) that you should keep Jeff.

One other thing, I'm not about to make my decision on firing a guy based on some 18 and 19 year olds flaking out. I'll add that I have been extremely disappointed to hear that Crocker was part of the problem in the off-season, as I thought he was a great young man [still do, but dissappointed if what is being reported is true]. Gallon and TMG were guys that flaked, and I think Jeff has learned a lesson.

I'm with you. This is the first I've read about Crocker being part of the problem, and I hope the guy has his facts wrong.

Sittler reported the same thing in his blog after the OSU game in KC. So, if 2 journalists have heard the same rumor, it's probably true, especially when the 2 journalists are at 2 different rags in 2 different states.

Opposite. I'm ambivalent as to whether Stoops stays or goes but he has certainly not proven that he is anything more than Phil Fulmer in a weaker conference.

Maybe you forgot losing back to back to Lester Miles, followed by the 35-7 dismantling by a very mediocre Kansas State in the Big XII title game, followed by LSU busting off a 70 yard run right up the middle on the first play in the Superdome, followed up by the 55-19 embarrassment to USC, followed by his QB being on the take (100 times more inexcusable than the Gallon situation), folllowed by the Boise State running up a big lead and then closing the deal on sandlot trick plays, followed by a start to finish thrashing by West Virginia, with a 4 out of 5 loss stretch to Texas ongoing.

So actually, if you haven't ever thought that Stoops should be gone, you spent a lot of time with Cheno on Gilligans Island and missed a lot of very poor coaching performances.

If Crocker and Willie were not showing leadership and were in essence fighting the system and if TMG was looking out mainly for TMG, it makes perfect sense that last year's team was headed for disaster. Those three are now gone. Hopefully, we won't have to deal with issues of that magnitude ever again.
