Capel on the radio today with Hale (Quotes now included)

Re: Capel on the radio at 4:10 p.m. today with Hale

Not a lot noteworthy there, other than James Hale referring to himself as a journalist. Hardly anything from Coach Capel that we haven't heard before, and by my count exactly zero actual basketball questions. I would kill for someone in the media to ask some questions that aren't just the off-the-court stuff.

Re: Capel on the radio at 4:10 p.m. today with Hale

Here are some of the notes/quotes I jotted down during the interview. These aren't complete quotes, and some stuff is left out but I typed as fast as I could.

About what went wrong last year >>> It was a lot of things. We weren't ever really a team. A group of individuals that never really came together. Had some injuries, were young. Had some guys who didn't play as well as they thought they would play. No leadership. Not a team worthy of winning.

You hope to have an atmosphere and program where there is one main agenda. The main agenda has to be the main objective also. That's something I don't think we had this year. A lot of this stuff started this last summer. I think we had a lot of things happen last summer that led to this. One of the main things is we had a group of guys who didn't know how to handle success. People constantly telling them how good they are. Success, if you don't know how to handle it, can make you soft. Guys didn't work as hard as they needed to work and it came back to bite us.

About the suspensions this season >>> It was very disruptive. Some of these that happened to us this year were self-inflicted. We couldn't control losing Willie. That was a major blow. I don't care what people said about the kid, when he went out we were 2-2 (in the Big 12). I felt like that he didn't play well against Baylor, Oklahoma State, played well against Missouri and at A&M. So for us that's not only losing your best player, it's losing a guy who puts so much pressure on the defense and takes up so much attention.

About the Pledger/Fitzgerald incident causing the team to lose momentum after the Texas win >>> I think so because we never won again. It was a such a big moment for us in that game. Texas had been No. 1 in the country. But there was so much emotion in that building that night with all the stuff with Wayman. But just his presence being out there created opportunities for other guys. It gave you hope, some excitement (after beating Texas). If we you believe, play hard, we work, we were a team that was worth of winning. And then a couple hours later two guys, you have that incident with two good kids. We never did get it back. We came back, we lose a heartbreaker at the buzzer (Texas Tech). We were never really to build off of what we did against Texas.

About the young players' future >>> I'm excited. To be completely honest, I'm very excited about the future of our program. There may be some that are in panic mode, I'm not. I know what has to happen, what will happen. I have a pretty good idea who will be back with us and who won't be back with us (also said that will be announced in the next couple of weeks). I feel good about the guys we're going to bring in and sign here in the late period. We need to get back to those blue collar guys, aren't afraid to work and do the little things.

Our defense was absolutely atrocious and embarrassing this year. It was the worst percentage defense I've ever coached. I'm excited to get back to blue collar guys who want to work. Sometimes you have to take two steps back in order to move forward. We'll use this as motivation to be a better basketball team this year.

About if it's possible a young player can improve his bad habits >>> If they can submit, if they learn how to submit. People that are entitled usually always underachieve. That's one of the things I thought was every evident in our program. I thought we were soft because I thought there was a sense of entitlement. That's something we have to get rid of. I do think guys can change, but you do have to admit that you can change. If we have guys in our program that won't change, it's up to me to make a change and I won't have a problem doing that going forward.

About Tiny Gallon saying he's coming back >>> You hear that, and I really don't understand why it's a story because from my end where are you going? (laughs). Unless you're thinking about transferring. (He said more but I wasn't able to get it).

About Willie Warren's future >>> Obviously Willie did not have a good year. In order for us to be the team that I thought we could become, Willie was going to have to play at an incredible level every night like James Anderson. But he didn't start off the way and then he got hurt. Maybe his stock has fallen. I still think if he decides to go, I still think he's a first round pick. Now is he a lottery pick? That will have to depend on workouts. One of the things in his favor is it's one of the weakest drafts in years. But with Willie a lot of will depend on his workouts. He should be able to get on the floor in a couple of weeks. He has a chance to play himself into the late lottery in the workouts. If I have a pick and Willie is still there between 20 and 25, I'm picking him myself. I'm going to get a steal. Here's a guy with top five talent.

About what building blocks they have coming back or will they have to get that in recruiting >>> I do think we have some. It may not be a guy that people look at and see incredible production. I look at a perfect example of this from this current season is Texas A&M. When you look at their basketball team, I think they have talent but I don't think they have any talent that jumps off the page right at you. They have two seniors and other guys that are tough and just buy in. I think a Cade Davis, I think a guy like Andrew Fitzgerald, he's going to have to completely revamp his body. It think a guy like Steven Pledger, a guy like Tiny Gallon.

Again, these aren't complete quotes and some stuff was missed.

Re: Capel on the radio at 4:10 p.m. today with Hale

I'm not going to read too much into what he said (or did not say regarding TMG). His answer was about building blocks for next season. He was just talking about needing to work hard, put in the work, etc. Cade Davis came up first. Fitz was second (a guy who seemingly puts in work and got better). Then Pledger. Then a reluctant mention of Tiny. I don't know the inner-workings of the team, but I wouldn't be shocked if TMG was one of the ones not putting the work in.

Re: Capel on the radio at 4:10 p.m. today with Hale

Only noteworthy things

Sounds like he thinks Willie is gone

And not mentioning TMG may say something about him getting the boot. May also mean we may recruit multiple JUCO PGs.

wow, major props to OUHoops! you must have some killer shorthand abilities ;)

Was there any questions asked about TMG?

I mean, if he wasnt brought up then why would you get the idea he would be getting the boot? just because he didnt talk about him?

Re: Capel on the radio at 4:10 p.m. today with Hale

Capel was not asked specifically about TMG. Drawing inferences about his future is just speculation on a certain individual's part.

No. The phrasing of the question was something like "Do you feel you have any players who are building blocks for next year returning, or is that something you need to go out and get in recruiting?"

The first player Capel mentioned was Davis, then Fitzgerald, then Pledger and then Gallon. And that was it.

It would have been nice if Hale had followed up on that and asked him about TMG after Capel didn't mention him.

He talked about every guy that looks to play except TMG.

He talked about how Fitzy needs to change his shape or something like that. Talked about Pledger and Cade needing to improve. Talked about Gallon needing to improve his attitude. Went extensively into how Willie's pro chances.

I'm not saying your wrong, because it is odd he didnt mention him but i just dont think i'd take too much from that...until we hear the announcements that were mentioned i think staying away from speculation is good for all of us...as far as i'm concerned nothing is set in stone...

I agree about not taking much from it, it seems odd, but it sounds like we'll know in a few weeks anyway who's back and who's gone. But what's a message board without speculation"? (of course you're right, it's probably good for our sanity after this year)

Re: Capel on the radio at 4:10 p.m. today with Hale

Probably the reason that he didn't mention TMG, is because the decision hasn't been made whether he will be back or not. If he knew one way or the other I'm sure he would have talked about it.

Always enjoy Capel on the radio, furthermore he seems to be readily available for interviews. Always very candid, especially for a coach.

As for what he said. For speculation sake, I don't think Willie & Ray will be on the team next season. Past that, there's a few I definitely think are returning (especially the ones he mentioned), and probably a couple more that are more up in the air.

Should make the next couple of weeks interesting.

pretty damn hilarious if TMG thinks hes good enough to play in the NBA right now.

I love the people on this board who read into things. Please let things play themselves out. By the way all of you guys are about a year away of being proven wrong about Coach Capel as a coach and a person. Here's to next year! BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!:clap

So you're saying people are reading wrong into the lack of TMG mention and he is definitely coming back? Tell us what you know...

I'm saying if you don't know that he's leaving then sit back and let things take their course. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!

Well, if I was laying Deano percentages on the guys coming back it would be;
Of course, this has everything to do with guessing and what was said the interview.

Gallon 75%
Warren 50%
Fitz 100%
Pledger 99%
TMG 25%
Willis 20%
