Capel quote on Romero Osby

Multiple independent qualified sources who have observed OU practice have stated that Osby is a "stud" and "the best player on the team".

Poor Capel haters. The guy is going to be revered for executing his second turnaround at OU in such a short timeframe in only his mid 30s.

Yeah if he does turn it around and that is a big if, he is only fixing the mess he made. Capel is over his head.

Just because he's the best player in our practices doesn't mean he's Kevin Durant. He is older than most of our guys and judging by his highlight videos, more talented. I dont think we should expect him to average 20 ppg next year, but he could be our best player right now and depending on the jump Clark, Fitz and Pledger make could be our best player next year.

I'm not surprised by these statements, I just don't think it's that big of a deal. Think about it. Earlier this year Nick Thompson was awarded captain and a starting position. It's not because he was that great, it's because his competition were freshman/sophs.

good point

Fitz, Pledger, and Clark good players. If OU gets Guerrero, he may be pretty good. OU just needs Osby to be very good and able to create his own scoring.

I agree.

In the one practice that I watched in person, Roe is the goods. He can stroke the three and is very athletic. I've heard that he just needs to work on his dribbling and he's pretty much a complete player. Should be fun to watch next year.

:clap:clap

So people that have seen him in person, is he naturally more of a big wing/3 type player, or does he have the tools to be a legitimate 4/post guy inside?

Or can he truly do both well? I've wondered about this as I've only seen a few old clips of him and never seen the guy in person--but it will clearly determine a lot of what we do and who plays where next year.

Dude just chill out. If you don't believe it then don't. You don't believe anything positive about this program or players anyway.

Just my 2 cents, but Capel is usually pretty honest with the media and his own team. Remember how he said last year's team shouldn't have been ranked as high as they were during the season? Yes he is also optimistic, and doesn't want to throw his players under the bus even when they play awful as we have at times this year.

I doubt he'd say someone who isn't even eligible is better than the players who are playing if they all didn't recognize it too. My main problem with getting too excited is that I realize more and more how crucial Cade has been to us this year. Replacing him is going to be tough.

good post, also Capel was saying before that season started that the work on and off the court had to get much better from certain players

Close friend of mine is an MSU grad and follows their basketball team like we do OU. I asked him about Osby. He said that Osby was supposed to be the best and highest rated recruit in school history and lead them to the promised land. When he arrived, he was put at the 4 and this placed him behind their best player, who was supposedly an NBA type. He said Osby wanted to play on the wing in order to get ready for the NBA and the coach didn't want to play him out there. He didn't really know why but said the word was the coach didn't think he dribbled well enough and also that he thought he could be dominate inside.

He said this lead to an attitude problem and Osby mostly not playing. He said that it was weird in that Osby wouldn't play for a few games and then would get in a game and score 15-20 points in just a few minutes and then not get in the next few games.

He thinks Osby has all world talent but didn't know if he would ever show it. Said they got glimpses of it but mostly just watched him on the bench. Said everyone down there really never knew just what was going on between their coach and Osby, but that he was a fan favorite and everyone wanted him to play. To his knowledge, Osby never got into any trouble at MSU and as far as he knows, he is a decent kid.

Anyway, this doesn't probably tell us much but it is one MSU fan's perspective on the kid. Here's hoping he fulfills his potential at OU. Frankly, I hope he is a really good 4 and not a perimeter player. It sounds like that might not be what he wants though.

Hopefully he won't put us in a position again where he has to turnaround OU basketball again.

I think Roe will be fine as in as far as being able to handle the hype. From what I've heard he is a very mature young man who is strong and driven to succeed. I don't think the things that Capel say are going to hurt him next year.

If BigTime's sources are correct in their assessment, his being driven to succeed is by FAR the most important statement in this thread.

As we all know, the streets and rec centers of America are FULL of cats who are long, strong, athletic, etc; but the guys who wake up each day driven for success are the ones who become special!

I recall thinking to myself mid-way through Blake's freshman season that he was lazy, immature, and in my opinion, underachieving relative to his obvious elite-level ceiling. Then, BOOM, he goes away the summer between his freshman and sophomore year, and comes back a very mature basketball player - driven to succeed. We all know how that turned out.

If Osby ends up truly being driven to succeed, coupled with his obviously high ceiling, it should be a fun evolution to watch the next two years!!

I'm really liking what I'm hearing about Osby. Thanks for the info everyone

I dont ever remember blake being lazy. But you are rigth on with blake coming back for his second season and making a huge jump in performance...his second year he made everyone around him better and he just seemed more active.

If Osby can do the same (considering he didnt do much at Miss. St.) that would be huge. And technically next year will be Osby's third year...I am sure he is no were near the player he was at Miss. St. at the start of next season

Blake let attitude make him "lazy" at times when his teammates or the refs did something he didn't agree with. I can distinctly remember him being the last guy in the back court literally walking up the floor in transition because he was visibly angry - not at all because he was winded or hurt.

That was gone when he came back for his sophomore year. He led by example and his skill level had elevated a ton because of the work he'd put in. Now, much of the talk surrounding him, speaks of his work ethic and his drive.

To me, that the crux of Blake's transformation from freshman with ultra-talent and possibilities, to one of the clear pillars of the next-generation NBA. Drive, drive, drive. Some have it early, some get it later, some never at all. I am betting Osby has found it, and we'll all be witness to the transformation, up close and personal, over the next two seasons!!!
