Capel's Future

Being a coach and a friend is a tough thing to do. I don't think coaches should worry about how much a player likes them but rather how much their players respect them. Being liked and being respected can turn out different results. However it has to go down to get the players to respond and I'm all for it. We've got some talent. Just have to figure out a way to get them to produce. I predict that the offseason will be played out a bit differently this summer. At least I hope so. Capel has to demand the respect and our players need to get in there and demand his respect as well. It has to go both ways. Players have to earn the respect title just as much as the coach does. So, they had a bad year. I'm all for supporting Capel and giving this team a chance to redeem itself. Next year is a new season. However, we still have a game/games to play. It's not over until the last play goes down. Supporting our team until the end and then we can focus on getting ready for next season.

Anyone know the details on Capel's current contract: specifically the school's buyout (since everyone's convinced he's gone after next season). Personally, I love Coach Capel and feel like he's going to develop significantly in the next few years, but I am curious to know who we could possibly hire to replace him (especially, if we have to pay a large buyout)?

Capel's a really young coach and his habit and style aren't set in stone yet. If he learns from this season and find a way to manage the players better he will keep getting better.

chico - I agree he needs to make himself the captain of the team. He can be players friends, but only if the respect him and his authority on the team first. I think he will learn from this season.

Everyone on here knows I'm a huge fan of how Coach Capel relates to the players and is their friend. I still think that he should be that way, however it's time to show the fellas the reigns so to speak. Show them more of his stern side when they don't play with great effort and discipline. They have to know that he will get in their ________ at any time if they don't play OKLAHOMA basketball. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!

I'll try to answer your questions. For one thing, TMG and Tiny will be a year older, and hopefully more mature in a lot of ways. Surely they both know by now that focusing fully on the NBA was/is the wrong approach. Take care of today's business and the future will take care of itself. If Tiny and TMG didn't learn anything from their experiences this season, I doubt if they ever will. But I saw a change in them, especially Tiny, in the last few games that leads me to believe we'll see a totally different approach on and off the court if both come back.

"hopefully"....that is the issue. Unlike you, I haven't seen anything in this team this season that would lead me to believe that we are going to be significantly improved next year. What I saw in the last two home games was the same old "selfish" play at times and a lack of effort (TMG not getting back on defense when Davis stole the ball on the perimeter ). Thus, I didn't see these guys "learning" from their earlier mistakes in the season. Instead, I saw a team of individuals and until I see that type of "attitude" change on the court, I don't hold out much hope.
