Chris Crutchfield

Good grief. I'm hesitant to root against Coach Crutchfield, but sheesh, it's going to be tough enough to bring this young team along quickly without Kruger having to also forge an entirely new group of assistants into a successful unit.

Well, he hasn't gotten it yet. But if he does, I wonder how that affects the '17 class. Especially Young and Minnesota big.

It's one of those unintended consequences of an ultra successful season. The upside should be that lots of good assistants will be interested in our openings.

While I agree with this...still tough for continuity (especially in recruiting) when you lose multiple guys in a single year. Makes you open your eyes to schools that have extended success (i.e. Duke, MI St, etc) that still manage to hang on to assistants for a long time. Just bad luck that we lose multiple guys all at once.

Kruger knows what he is doing, obviously, but a lot of these guys have been with him for a long time....tough to replace.

I do wish them all the very best of luck though. I'll root for them all

crazy. wish we could have had one more year with all of them to help with this recruiting class

Don't want people to leave? Pay them so it makes their decision that much more difficult.

But this is tough: pay someone $250,000 as a lead assistant or watch them get 850,000 as a head coach.

That certainly applies if they are looking at other assistant jobs, but do we want to pay head coach money to assistants?

If his goal is to be a head coach, it's a moot point. Unless it's some directional D3 school OU can't match, that's ridiculous. What you hope is that he's like a Cale Gundy, doesn't really care about being a HC and is happy getting a huge salary in a low cost of living state doing what he is happy doing. Gundy is OU born and bred though, don't think that would apply here.

Or, a former head coach who realized after he got fired that he wasn't cut out to deal with all of the head aches associated with being the man in charge. There were examples of guys like that in the Big 12 last year. I'm just too lazy to look them up and make a list of the names.

In other words, being a head coach is not for everyone.

We almost lost him to UALR. Hope he is able to get the job even though it will hurt us.

Buddy capitalized on a great season, coaches should be doing the same. Crutch won't be nearly as attractive after next season.

That's ridiculous, of course he will.

Probably even MORE attractive next year, when we sign Trae Young

Here's are a couple of articles about the NMSU search for a new coach.

Interviews for NMSU men's basketball head coaching job reportedly take place

Mark Rudi, Las Cruces Sun-News 6:33 p.m. MDT April 22, 2016

LAS CRUCES – Interviews for the New Mexico State men’s basketball coaching position reportedly have taken place Friday and will continue this weekend.

The finalist field is believed to be NMSU associate head coach Paul Weir, Arizona associate head coach Joe Pasternack, Baylor assistant coach Jerome Tang and Oklahoma assistant Chris Crutchfield. And according to CBS’s Gary Parrish, citing an unnamed source, those four have interviewed for the position.

NMSU athletic director Mario Moccia told the Sun-News on Friday he is sticking to not putting a timetable on when a new head coach could be named and has said since the process began he will not a put a timetable on it. Moccia would not confirm that interviews have taken place.

Weir was on former NMSU head coach Marvin Menzies’ staff for nine seasons and has been the Aggies’ associate head coach since 2011. Pasternack is the only one of the group that has head coaching experience, being New Orleans’ head coach from 2007-2011. He’s been in Tucson since 2011 and Sean Miller’s associate head coach since 2013. Tang has been at Baylor on Scott Drew’s staff the 13 seasons Drew has been the head coach in Waco, Texas. Crutchfield is a former NMSU assistant under Lou Henson from 2001-05 and has been an Oklahoma assistant since 2011, helping the Sooners to the Final Four this season.

Menzies’ contract approved at UNLV

Former New Mexico State coach Marvin Menzies’ contract was approved 12-1 by the University of Nevada Board of Regents on Friday and was introduced as the Runnin’ Rebels’ new head coach on Friday.

Menzies’ contract is a five-year deal, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal and will make a reported $700,000 annually his first three seasons and $800,000 annually the final two years of the contract. Menzies’ base salary at NMSU was around $289,000, but could earn up to $400,000 including bonuses from this past season.

NMSU Director of Basketball Operations Preston Laird will join Menzies at UNLV in the same role while NMSU special assistant to the head coach Brandon Mason will also be on Menzies’ staff at UNLV.

Lou Henson throws support behind Paul Weir

Jason Groves, Las Cruces Sun-News 5:38 p.m. MDT April 21, 2016

LAS CRUCES – There has been a groundswell of local support behind current New Mexico State associate head coach Paul Weir to replace Marvin Menzies as the head men's basketball coach.

You can now add a Hall of Fame coach to that list.

While NMSU Director of Athletics Mario Moccia conducts interviews over the next two days, the 84-year old Henson believes the Aggies should give Weir his first Division I head coaching job.

"It is common practice for an athletic director to interview people," Henson said. "There is nothing wrong with that. He knows Paul and I know Paul very well. For the past eight years, I have been around Paul a lot and I think he's outstanding."

The finalist pool is believed to include Weir, Arizona assistant Joe Pasternak, Baylor assistant Jerome Tang and Oklahoma assistant Chris Crutchfield, who was on Henson's staff in 2001-05.

Henson's support for Weir stems from a proven track record of recruiting talented Canadian players to Las Cruces, New Mexico, site unseen in many cases.

"This is a hard place to recruit to," Henson said. "Paul has a background in recruiting. Where the other guys are coming from, they could not recruit here."

Many critics of a Weir hire on Twitter, Facebook and fan sites have expressed concern regarding style of play. Weir has coached the Aggies' defense while Menzies and Keith Brown coached the offense in recent seasons.

NMSU was in the Top 10 in scoring defense last season and 215th in scoring offense, as the Aggies' offense has been stagnant in recent years despite the presence of NBA prospect Pascal Siakam. Henson believes that Weir brings his own philosophies to the table.

"I talk basketball with him (Weir) a lot and he is very knowledgeable about the game of basketball," Henson said. "The head coach dictates everything. Here is what I think you will see in Paul. First of all, he is a tremendous defensive coach and defensive rebounding coach. You have to have those ingredients to be very good. I think you will see a full offense. You would see a fast-breaking team and a team running a good offensive pattern."

Henson and his wife Mary are leaving Las Cruces on Tuesday to return to Champaign, Illinois, where Henson will resume treatment for a bone marrow disorder. The couple splits their year between New Mexico and Illinois. When he returns to Las Cruces in the fall, the Aggies will have a new basketball coach. Henson wanted to make his choice known before leaving.

"Mario is going to try to find the right candidate and I don't know if he will pick Paul," Henson said. "I really don't know, but I would think that he would."

It sucks to have to replace a bunch of guys all at once. But, there is nobody I would rather have than Kruger to assemble a new staff. He knows everybody in the business, and has one of the best reputations. There won't be a shortage of quality candidates wanting to work for him.
