Honestly I think he's an underachiever with all of his beneficial seeds, unparralledd recruiting hype, beneficial officiating.

If that is the case, you must think Dean Smith or Roy Williams is the most overrated coach in NCAA history

He didn't always get beneficial seeds, recruiting hype and beneficial officiating. He did not post a winning ACC record until 1985. His second and third years at Duke he had losing records (82 and 83) on the season and horrible ACC records. He had a losing conference record his first season.

No way. Not saying he doesn't get some benefits, but to say he's an underachiever is ridiculous.

Don't forget that Wooden guy. And Bill Self. Kansas basically recruits itself.
At least an argument can be made that Smith did less with more than anyone else in CBB history. Rick Barnes may eventually catch him but it isn't exactly apples to apples because Barnes loses most of his great talent after one year unlike Smith back in the day

Exactly.
I remember those UNC teams in the early 80's that had Worthy, Jordan, Perkins, and Daughtry all on the roster. Those teams were every bit as talented as what Kentucky threw out last year, but only 1 of those UNC teams won the NC and I don't think they made the final 4 other than that 1 season (81 or 82).
I remember the years Duke struggled when K had the medical issues. It was when Jeff Capel was on the roster, and those were some talented teams. The year he sat out with the issue they were in the tank. The next year he returns with the exact same roster and they win the ACC. If he weren't a very good coach, why didn't they win without him that year?
K is a fantastic coach. When he was building his program he went final 4's in 86, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 94, which is 7 out of 9 years. That's incredible. And, he had some talent, but nothing like what Kentucky's had recently.
When Mikey took over, the Dookies were coming off of three straight NCAA tourneys under Bill Foster. Preceding Mikey were Eddie Cameron, Gary Gerard, Harold Bailey, Vic Bubbas (who is widely regarded as the guy who brought the program to NCAA tourney prominence), Bucky Waters, and Neil McGeachy. All but McGeachy won consistently. Did Mikey do great things? Yes. He continued an established winning tradition and improved the program. But, he did not inherit a program void of talent or name recognition.
Did Dean Smith underachieve? Yes, for the talent he had. He inherited a great program from Frank McGuire in 1961.
Did Roy Williams underachieve? Yes, while at KU...IMO. However he took over at UNC from Matt Doherty who all but ruined the program. Roy inherited great players and won the title his second year there.
Ask yourself this question. How would Billy Tubbs have done if he'd coached at Dook all those years with all that talent? Or Tom Izzo?
