College Athletes are Employees

i would guess she is not at a D1 school correct??

D1 athletic full scholarships pay for school plus room and board

She's not, but that actually doesn't happen for many non-revenue sports even at the D1 level.

Football and basketball are really about the only sports that give full rides

Additionally, she had an offer from a D1 school in the area and the same held true at that school. There were things related to academics that were covered by the athletic department but not all. However, everything related to her athletic participation was covered - meals, clothing, travel, health care, etc

BTW, I haven't even really covered the benefits directly related to her sport. She gets a new $350 bat every year and replacements if necessary. She gets new shoes, socks, workout gear, travel gear, Under Armour, etc...plus a new fielders glove every 2 years.

I am interpreting that you and your daughter think it is a good deal. I am correct?

Absolutely. I could go on and on about benefits she gets that you normally wouldn't even think about...she's going to Europe this summer for one...we have to cover part of the cost but dang...

I am wondering what those that think the kids are being abused think they should get? How much more money and benefits should be provided and who gets it?

I

Its beyond dumb. The irony is, the guys yelling the loudest probably grew up with much less. We're an average middle class family and my daughter would tell you she is MORE than compensated for the time she spends on the field. In fact, she would tell you she's been blessed to have the opportunity.

Yeah I don't think they should get a blank check from schools. Maybe just a guarantee of coverage a few years after graduation? So if your parents can't cover you and you don't have a job yet your health isn't at risk.

Honestly, I haven't given much thought about this. There may be plenty of things wrong with that idea.

I heard 2 things yesterday that I think should be done. One is health care while still in school and for football related injuries for a certain time after playing is complete. Second is for 5 years after football is complete they can attend school with no tuition until degree is finished. Now the former athlete would have to pay room and board, but it allows them time to finish. This would also work for a player that goes to NFL and is no longer in the league in 2 years he can go back and finish degree.

They already get health care for free.

The rest is stupid.

Once scholorship is up , they loose healthcare. What I heard is if they are still attending school they should get coverage for any releated injury. Such as bad knees, injured back.

A kid on our team last year was still in school first semester after her eligibility was up. They were paying for her medical expenses related to her knees.

BTW, why would they think they could sluff off in school for 4 or 5 years and then expect the school to coddle them some more? This stuff is just so illogical it's just plain silly.

Think about what you're saying. We have players graduating in 3 years and we're trying to baby the underachievers another 3-5 years.

As for d1 almost all women's sports are full ride. Because of title 9 to equal out football and men's basketball. Women's ball for example has 15 ships for women.

All other men's sports have partial ships. Baseball has 11.7 scholarships for 20+ players.

I'm generally in favor of unions, collective bargaining, and revenue sharing. But, college athletes have a really good deal as it is. If anything becomes of all this it will mess up things for more ball players than it would help.

If football players receive in some way more compensation, will the number of scholarships have to be cut in some non revenue sports? How about the money it takes to meet title nine requlations.

Does the quarterback get merchandise revenue and the linemen don't. Sacks might go up. This stuff all sounds like solutions when no problem exist.

That information might be incorrect. Because of the number of players on a football team, that number is exempt from title nine matching requirements. Past that, participants in men's and women's sports should be equal.

The players are an essential part of the product. They deserve a seat at the table. Period.

Hey bounce, looks like your 99% consensus prediction on this topic was only about 50% off. That's actually good for you!! Keep trolling junior.

This is not close to true and I know this for a fact.

They deserve what they are getting. What does some 20 year old know about managing something as complex as a university's budget or anything related to health and safety? They may have a general idea towards the end of their career, but that would be a very small number.

It looks like the big schools involved put out between 50-100 thousand a year per scholarship athlete. When is that amount tax free not a pretty good deal. If a school drops the program as I suspect the academic oriented institutions (Northwestern, Duke, Stanford, etc.) would drop football in a heartbeat rather than deal with a unionized situation of this type. Then the players who would benefit would be the losers in the deal.

But it would not stop there. Basketball would be next. And how about baseball with their partial scholarships. Would they not push for equal treatment with football and basketball where full scholarships are the norm.

And I must have missed the headline where conferences are cashing multi-billion checks. Are we sure this is happening? some people just aren't cognizant of numbers and others choose to ignore their consequences. Those are the ones who will be first to riot in the streets when the money runs out.

There are more unintended consequences to this than we can conceive.
