College Athletes are Employees

I heard 2 things yesterday that I think should be done. One is health care while still in school and for football related injuries for a certain time after playing is complete. Second is for 5 years after football is complete they can attend school with no tuition until degree is finished. Now the former athlete would have to pay room and board, but it allows them time to finish. This would also work for a player that goes to NFL and is no longer in the league in 2 years he can go back and finish degree.

Five years? That is ridiculous. Why do they need 9 years to complete college (10 if they redshirt)? It would be one thing to say you get one semester or possibly a year but five is just stupid. They have to pass 12 hours per semester to stay eligible.

A kid on our team last year was still in school first semester after her eligibility was up. They were paying for her medical expenses related to her knees.

BTW, why would they think they could sluff off in school for 4 or 5 years and then expect the school to coddle them some more? This stuff is just so illogical it's just plain silly.

Ok let me clarify, I did not mean 4 or 5 years more in school. I would hope that it would take 1 more year or less. But I was thinking of a player trying to make the pros. Give him a year or 2 to go for it then return to school to finish a semester or 2.

see above. Did not mean 5 more years to finish. Give them more time to presue pro sports then return. Should only be a semester or 2 more.

I think allowing an athlete to finish up a few class to graduate with no tuition costs is ok. Of course then need to pay their own room and board though.

They deserve what they are getting. What does some 20 year old know about managing something as complex as a university's budget or anything related to health and safety? They may have a general idea towards the end of their career, but that would be a very small number.

That's why they have experienced reps to negotiate their position. Just like Stoops has an agent. Players have been denied representation in a multi billion $ industry. That's unamerican.

Alright, I'm moving this to the smack board. Feel free to rip each other apart now without fear of nazi admin attacks.

The great majority of coaches and a good number of athletic directors are former college athletes. The student athletes are being fairly represented.

In the key positions which set precedents for the industry, this is just simply not true anymore. The old model of former coaches becoming ADs is dying and there are few cases where that takes place at high level institutions.

See my Mack Brown/Texas analogy earlier.

Coaches? You surely don't believe ADs don't consult with their coaches do you? Athletes ARE fairly represented and you guys all know that. This is COMPLETELY about spoiled athletes "getting theirs" period and them having zero understanding that very few universities are making a dime off of them. In 99% of all cases, the athletes benefit much greater than the university does.

This is total nonsense. It's like saying a stage hand working for ESPN is fairly represented by the Disney CEO making $50 million a year because they both work for Disney.

Fair representative has to be independent without even the slightest conflict of interest. The multi Million $ salary of coaches & AD's is a glaring conflict. Where do you think any type of increased player benefit would come from?

Section, your views are obviously slanted because your daughter plays in an unprofitable sport. If they were selling her jersey for $75,000 to donors and she got suspended for accepting $100 for her autograph your tune would change in a heartbeat.

No, I'm just not ignorant to the fact that 99% of athletes get way more than they give. There aren't more than a handful of jerseys being sold for $75k. Just because you have no experience with this subject, it doesn't mean that all of us have no experience. I'm really good friends with 2 notable OU athletes and your opinion is not shared by those families.
