Cortes Returning

lol at thinking one of the best NBA players of all time was not "athletic"

is chris paul athletic??

Your definition of great athlete is a lot different than mine.

See you can't say someones takes are bad. Then call Cortes a great athlete. Because that is the worst take I've seen on here so far.

He was a great athlete in high school, which is what I was obviously talking about.

He’s a solid P5 athlete & average for a P5 pg, which means he’s athletic.

Also your Stockton take is horrendous.

If Bijan Cortes turns into half the player John Stockton was- in college- he could be the greatest true PG in OU history.

Stockton's stats his senior year at the Zags- 21PPG, 4 Steals PG, 7.2 APG, and 58% from the field.

I will take that unathletic prototype PG any day of the week, and wouldn't care if he could dunk or not.

Too many people are too down on Cortes. Sad to read all this. He will make major improvements over the next couple of years.

Agree 100%. The same people who would take exception if people posted negatives on their kids.

Cortes is not athletic, neither was Stockton.

Stockton had high B-Ball IQ. He knew he couldn't compete athletic wise with NBA players, so he used his B-Ball IQ to his advantage. Average shooter, great passer, solid defender for a PG. Stockton was the epitome for having a high Basketball IQ and using that to his advantage. Cortes I hope gets that quick, because athletically he isn't there.

Comparing a 7’6 dunking and Bijan. You do you.

Looking back at your posts. Not many things said positive about any Sooner player. Glad you could join us.

Seriously? Because I don't sunshine pump OU players, and I call Cortes like he is? I've also said nice things about Goldwire while everyone else dumps on him. But I digress.

Yes, being a top defender, having the most steals and dunking the basketball at 6'1". Yes, 100% unapologetically yes.

What is your standard for athletic? Lebron James? You have very unreasonable standards to try and fit your comparable narrative.

Did you also just try to compare George Muresan to John Stockton? Over a foot of difference in height. Come no man, you have to see how outlandish that was.

Spud Webb was athletic. Stockton was not a supreme athlete. Harold Minor was, Isiah Rider was. Even Dan the man was athletic. Kendall Gill was athletic, Larry Johnson was athletic. Dell Curry? Not so athletic.

Difference was. All those guys when they lost their athleticism they couldn't compete in the NBA with their B-Ball IQ. Unlike Stockton. Stockton never was a good athlete or great athlete. He was just supremely intelligent with the basketball. It also helped he had Karl Malone all those years.

Cortes could learn a thing or two from Stockton. Since he's not really athletic.

How can you be a great defender in the NBA in the 90s, top 50 player all time, & not be athletic?

There’s a quote out there that Stockton never lost a sprint during practice with the Jazz. Dude had elite speed, foot speed, reaction time, hand eye coordination, & endurance.

If you think being athletic is just jumping high and running fast, you don’t understand what makes a great athlete. Period.

Again, a completely bad take. Are you trolling? I ask that seriously.

Jason Kidd, Michael Jordan, Gary Payton, Chris Paul, Maurice Cheeks, Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen, Lebron James...would you consider them good/great athletes or athletic? If you answered, "no"...you are a lost cause. If you answered "yes", Stockton has at least 600 more steals than any of those guys.

Gary Payton said that John Stockton was the toughest player to guard...above Jordan. But hey, all smarts right?

Go watch some highlights of him splitting defenses, bodying people, and jumping mid-lane with a wrap around assist or shot. He thrived attacking the paint. People don't play in the NBA for 19 years, only missing 22 games, and are not athletic in some way.

I am not sure why you are willing to die on this hill.

So most of the guys in a dunk contest in the 90s? (and Dan Majerle) lol

Being a great athlete and being athletic really aren't the same thing at all.

You can be athletic and be a terrible player. On the flip side, you can be pretty average athletically, and be a pretty good player.

While I agree there is more to being athletic than jumping high and running fast, it's not on accident that those two things are measured, pretty much first, at things like the NFL and NBA combines/draft camps. They also do agility measurements (think cone drill).

Do need to make this more complicated than it needs to be. The measurables when assessing athleticism are pretty widely known.
