Cortes Returning

He showed us his skill in the Iowa State game at home. Perhaps the success he had in that game gave him a false sense of security about what he could do going forward. It might not be the skill he is lacking but the judgment on what pass is open in D1 as opposed to in high school.

ding ding ding we have a winner ...

he was careless with the ball he didn't turn it over because of a lack of athleticism ..

Cool.

Guess Alex Spaulding was destined for greatness because of his one great game.

Sadly, virtually the whole team was turnover-prone. It's an area in which we simply must see significant improvement next season.

I couldn’t agree more. OU was the second worst turnover team in the Big 12 last season with a 14.74 average per game. OSU was marginally worse with a 15.10 average.

That has to change! But when you already know your primary ball handler to be is turnover prone, confidence is not an easy hill to climb.

I agree with what MsP said about Bijan’s judgement, but it was a lot easier to buy that early in the season. Problem is, he continued to repeat the same careless mistakes in nearly every game. A lack of athleticism, careless errors, plain ol’ bad luck? The result is the same. You’re giving the ball to the other team. Porter’s patience as well as his hook got shorter and shorter toward the end of the season. So, it’s obvious he knows that’s an area we have to improve.

If anyone watchs that interview with Porter yesterday. He says you can’t have 13 guys that all are gonna play and be happy. There’s gonna be guys that are practice bodies whether you like it or not.

Posters who saw Bijan play in high school told us the entire season that he had the skills and the athleticism to play the point at OU. I continued to say he could shoot, because that’s what his stats showed. I still believe I was right, but he refused to shoot for some reason. He teased us with an occasional fancy pass or two, but nothing I saw makes me think he is ready to run our offense next season. The only thing he was consistent at was turnovers, the same mistakes I alluded to earlier.

If I was wrong, prove it. I want to believe Bijan can be our starting PG next season. Nothing I would like more than to see an instate player running our offense!

Bijan shot such a high % in high school bc people sagged off him so much. The reason they did that was because he was a slightly above average shooter but was reluctant. He was a great athlete & elite passer, so teams tried to make him get 20 points & 4 assists as opposed to 15 & 12.

Bijan is a guy prepping for a critical role on a very good team as an upperclassmen. When he's a junior or senior, he might be a 6 or 7 ppg guy with 3 assists and a couple rebounds ... but he'll be able to spell our starters without a lot of dropoff and a ton of knowledge about the system by then. That's how you build a winning team.

Very good sign here. Not because I think Bijan is or will be great. But it shows me two things:

1. Two freshmen that came in after committing to previous coach and didn’t play a ton both have chosen to stay with Moser.

2. Sign of self awareness that maybe he will “only” be a role player, but that he can improve and perhaps impact the program positively as he gets older/gets better.

Off-season is off to a good start in my eyes as it shows the players on the team appear to buy into what the staff is selling.

Would rather he had entered the portal and OU picked a more talented player.
Cortes seems like a nice young man who would be better off at a school with less visibility i.e. Mt. West, Valley etc.

Your definition of great athlete is a lot different than mine.

See you can't say someones takes are bad. Then call Cortes a great athlete. Because that is the worst take I've seen on here so far.

He'll average 6-7 ppg and 3 assists? Nate Britt like, right? Sign me up for that! That's exactly what I would prefer his ceiling be. I think he'll average 5 PPG, and like 2 assists. But that would be even more amazing.

Cortes isn’t a great athlete at this level but he is plenty athletic. He has some pretty nasty dunks on his high school tape. He just needs to play faster mentally, which will come as he gets more reps in practice/games.

He didn't look athletic last year at this level. John Stockton dunked in NBA games. Was he athletic? I don't think so.

This may be the worst take I have ever seen...

John Stockton could dunk, played in the NBA, all-time leader in assists AND steals all at 6'1"! Unathletic and all-time leader in steals? umm, ok.

Please take a keyboard break. Please.

You really think Stockton was athletic? I just can't. Because the man could pass, and play defense he was athletic?

So, if you can dunk a basketball. You're automatically athletic? My goodness.

Guessing George Muresan was athletically gifted too since he could dunk and play defense? I just can't. The point being. Just because you can dunk a basketball, doesn't make you athletic or even a "great" athlete. Like said poster stated.

Yes, being a top defender, having the most steals and dunking the basketball at 6'1". Yes, 100% unapologetically yes.

What is your standard for athletic? Lebron James? You have very unreasonable standards to try and fit your comparable narrative.

Did you also just try to compare George Muresan to John Stockton? Over a foot of difference in height. Come no man, you have to see how outlandish that was.

Comparing a 7’6 dunking and Bijan. You do you.

Looking back at your posts. Not many things said positive about any Sooner player. Glad you could join us.

I also just read that Stockton had a resting heart rate in the mid-30s during his playing days. But nah, he was just some regular guy -- no different than any 6'1" dude walking the street of any city. People truly underestimate the athleticism of pro athletes. Was Stockton elite compared to his peers? Of course not. But to suggest someone could accomplish what he did without being a good athlete is crazy.

Speaking of athletes, has anyone seen the 30 for 30 on Coach K? I despise Duke but watch all of those shows, and it was shown again last night. Apparently Coach K is retiring or something, I had no idea, I wish the networks had given that story more attention. In any event, I always forget how explosive an athlete Johnny Dawkins was. He had one dunk in particular in a tourney game that was jaw dropping. He is/was so scrawny and looked like a regular dude, but holy cow.

George muresan was like 7-6. That’s comparing apples to giraffes.

When a 6-1 guy throws it down from just inside the free throw line, that shows some athleticism. I never said he was a great athlete at this level, only that he has plenty of athleticism. The reason he looked slower this year was because he was thinking way too much. Once he dials in mentally, he will play much faster IMO.
