Bleacher Report Column

Under This Week's Grades

F: Marcus Smart’s flopping: Oklahoma State’s point guard has long been admired for his passion and work ethic. But his continuous habit of blatantly falling during games isn’t very funny anymore. I actually believe the problem has become so noticeable that it’s damaging Smart’s reputation.

That column references a Lost Letterman gif and comments

This morning on the 810 WHB in Kansas City they were discussing the intentional foul last night on Wiggins with 3 minutes left that sealed the game for KU.

The host of the show, Steven St John, said "can you imagine if that had been Smart getting fouled instead of Wiggins? He would have done a backflip into the crowd!". Then the others on the show started coming up with all kinds of funky stuff he would do which reminded me of the scene from Naked Gun:

I almost wrecked my car I laughed so hard.

Funny stuff! The two web sites in chiron's post are among a growing list of media outlets and fan boards that are onto Smart's shenanigans. I think all of the publicity he has received has hurt him a lot more than any advantage he gains via an occasional bogus call, because Big 12 officials are watching for it now. There is no way they can escape all of the attention Marcus has brought on himself with his all too obvious acting job.

I agree. His flopping was big news here last year because the KSU coach complained so much about it.

I have a friend on facebook who officiates high school sports (mainly baseball; I know "umpires" instead of officiate). Anyway, he's a big OSU fan and he's complained about the officiating mainly in the KU game (OSU vs KU) but also in bedlam. I sent him the articles Chiron posted and he said "not everytime someone goes down is it a flop". Which, I agree, but like I told him, unfortunately for Marcus he has flopped so much and every Big 12 coach is onto it that every time he goes down the initial thought from everyone is he's flopping. I bet more times than not when he draws a valid charge he won't get the call based on his reputation.

I wish it were so, but he seems to still get the calls, as far as I can see. He certainly did on Monday night.

He got in foul trouble too though. I can't remember if all of his fouls were valid but my OSU friends are telling me they weren't. ;)

He is a very aggressive defender and should be in foul trouble in virtually every game.

But on the offensive side, he is coddled by the officials, and even his oft-discussed flops generally draw the whistles he's seeking.

Dude could have fouled out at least twice - 10 fouls - in that game. Aggie has no room to complain. Hell he undercut Cam in the first couple of minutes of the game...no call

Exactly! And I think it continues. The NCAA needs stars and he's promoted as such so he'll get the benefit of the doubt most every time!

He CLEARLY charged right into Cousins on a layup attempt a minute into the second half on Monday night with no whistle blown because the refs knew he already had 2.

It was Woodard, not Cousins. But it was a horrible no call.
