Cousins

they should start with you

just your whiny ass

I'm not whining about it. I'm not asking for any help. I don't need the ref's to take care of myself. The whiners are the people that don't like how I have responded to what I perceived as hard fouls that weren't called. I think that I have spotted you in that group from time to time.

While it's true that I'm not here nearly as much as I used to be, I'm as close as I have ever been to avoiding this board completely. Why? Because I'm tired of silly arguments and pissing contests that never accomplish anything of value.

OUHoops.com has a special place in my heart. I have been here from the start since my friend, OUHoops, launched the site several years ago. Before that, I was a mod on the OUInsider board. Truth is, I'm just old and cranky and worn out from dealing with crap like this way too long!

Then again, I'm not one who turns tail and runs at the first sign of trouble. No one here can say that I have not tried to be fair as well as nice in the way I have handled my duties as an admin over the years. Sure, there have been times that I get irritated. Like I said, I'm old and cranky and my patience is wearing thin these days. But I always return to a fairly low-key approach with an emphasis on treating everyone with respect. I have also defended the position the dissenters in this argument have taken the past few months. Both make good points, and I don't have a problem with supporting what they say. That has not nor will it ever change.

You're wrong about one thing, Gary. Posters who choose to air their dirty laundry on message boards chase a lot more people off than anything the admins will ever do. I'm all for a sensible debate where people don't always agree, or they agree to disagree and move on. That's what makes message boards fun as well as interesting. But this? All crap like this is good for is to destroy threads, and it will eventually do the same to this board if it continues.

I'm not here to lecture. Like I said, I would rather not interfere at all. I'm perfectly content to be "just one of the guys" and talk about basketball. All I'm asking you to do is to end this feud so the rest of us can enjoy a thread free of personal insults and hateful remarks. Is that too much to ask?

dude, this is a message board...not a basketball game.

I know what a basketball game is. I know what a message board is. But, I'm not for sure what a dude is. I'm not sure what you think a dude is.

I know that I'm not the drug store cowboy kind of dude. I have more hours in the saddle than John Wayne. I know that I'm not the Big Lebowski kind of dude. I don't smoke dope.

Is it that you are one of those kinds of dudes and you think that everyone is also a similar dude?

That's just like, your opinion, man.

I wasn't taking a personal shot at you. I was making a general observation of the situation. Being an OU basketball fan, the concept of a basketball message board has some appeal. Giving the current availability of my time, that is why I chose to participate.

I am not trying to present myself as blameless. I have made some mistakes. I was ignorant of the message board culture. It is all new to me.

The message board culture has probably caused me the most trouble. I grew up in a different time and different environment. When I was young, if you ran your mouth to the wrong person, in the wrong place, at the wrong time, you got your butt kicked. You were asking for it and it was the expected response. As a young man I gained experience as both the kicker and kickee.

The message board culture, come to find out, is different. People are anonymous and they say what they want with no consequences. They are emboldened by that. The tone is harsher and more critical than person to person conversation. Come to find out, I can do that too.

Just as an example, an over and done with water under the bridge moment comes to mind. One of my primary adversaries had googled Norman Oklahoma bail bondsmen. My old business name and my name came up. That person relayed to me that since I was no longer anonymous, my ability to speak harshly had ended. That was the oddest thing anyone had ever said to me.

Whatever I say, whether it is prudent or not, right or wrong, dumb or smart, is what I am thinking or feeling at the moment. Being anonymous has never been a factor. My user name is first name, middle initial, last name initial. That hardly meets the standards of operating in the shadows.

I'll give you credit for being fair most all the time. Because of that I'll make an effort to raise the level of discourse on my own. I'm reluctant to give up the option of responding in kind. But, we will give it a shot. Have a nice day.

This is easily the worst thread in the history of this board.

And a funny thing is that this board is easily rated G or PG. Heck, I had a mod PM me to reprimand me because I used a common internet acronym based on LOL which has a curse word in it.

The trolling and attacking of posters on this board is mild.

Gary,

The herd mentality around here has carried over from OUinsider. The rules have always been selectively applied based on whether or not your opinion and posts fit snugly within the conventional homer bandwagon. If not the "regulars" are allowed to demean and belittle you with impunity. If you responf to their attacks outside the terms expect some form of laughable "punishment".

My advice to you is just consider the source. You shouldn't care what the bandwagon, in the box regulars, say or do. Just laugh at them and when you are attacked outside the rules realize it's because there are only rules if you aren't towing the company line.

Thanks for the input and confirmation. However, I must admit that it is a rare and slightly troubling moment when we are in such agreement. And of course, I say that in the best possible way and context.

Yeah, we disagree all the time. Legitimate disagreements where sometimes one of us is right and visaversa. The "regulars" are never wrong. There is no amount of evidence that can overturn the company line.

I completely disagree. I think a huge percentage of kids have run from the cops in a similar situation. When kids are toilet papering a house and cop car turns down the street what do they do?

When kids are fighting and a copy shows up what do they do?

When kids are partying in a field and the cops pull in, what do they do?

I think the answer is run and I don't think it is a big deal. Now if the kids were involved in a felony and ran, then it is a bigger deal.

I was faced with 2 of those 3 situations and I ran both times.

He's just a kid and kids make mistakes. As Gary said, at least he wasn't stealing clothes from Dillards.

Dude: booze, strippers, cops and evading arrest. That's college BABY! I did the same things more than I care to say, but still managed to turn out okay [and worse, secretly I'm jealous of Cousins, that sounds like an awesome night!].

You realize you're one of the regulars, right boca? So is garyeb. You guys are in every thread and you are always in an argument with someone. There is never a respectful tone (not just from you). I can guarantee you that there are good posters who I know that post less because every thread turns into chest pumping argument involving you two and a few of the people you're calling "regulars."

You can complain up and down about us as the admins, but the fact of the matter is that there was a time when this board was filled with passionate fans who could disagree respectfully. This isn't a message board culture thing. This is about people. Where I'm from only hotheads fight each other over words because everyone else has the sense to know better and the self confidence to be comfortable with their thoughts in the face of disagreement.

The good people I know are able listen and disagree without it always being a fight. The best people I know can even have their opinion changed by someone else who makes a good argument. I think this board needs a lot more of people acting like that right now.

At the end of the day you've got to look at yourself and realize that you aren't always the victim in the events of your life. If you're always in a fight it isn't because of anyone, but you. And if you are always in a fight it isn't the fault of the "regulars," it isn't the fault of online culture, and isn't the fault of the admins. Fights take two to people and I am imploring everyone on the board to disagree with others without being aggressive and to be the bigger man when someone else is acting like a hothead.

There was a time when I would have said this was a place full of good people who were friendly. I'd love to see that again.

I agree this would have gone down as a good night when I was 18-22 except for the fact that Cousins got a citation. I think far too many people are way too judgmental of these kids. Kids do stupid things. God knows I did.
