Howard for Harrison Barnes + Bogut + a 1st round pick is the scuttlebutt.

Nash
Kobe
Barnes
Gasol
Bogut

Amnesty for Artest.

Calderon
Curry
Thompson
Lee
Howard

Interesting for both sides.

Looks like wishful thinking by the Warriors. Howard has probably been in the bag for the Rockets the entire time & who can blame him. They are in position to give him the max without sacrificing any of their core and still have room left over to pick up Calderon.

Now we'll see if Harden & Howard are truly quarters or sexy looking dimes. No excuses for either of them if this goes down.

That would seem to confirm that Howard has told them he's heading elsewhere wouldn't you think Nick?

It is official. Houston is a much better fit than LA was for Howard. It's going to be interesting to see how Harden changes with a more clogged up lane. May force him to be more of a jump shooter than he already was.

Rumor (at one time) was that Howard wanted he and Josh Smith to join the Rockets, and along with Harden, to be the new Big 3.

I wonder if Houston is able to move Lin and Asik, if they could offer Smith something close to a max deal?

I'll say this about the NBA, they have by FAR the most interesting free agency movements of any of the major sports.

Gonna be interesting to see how Dwight works out in Houston. I liked what Asik was doing. I guess they think he's going to give them so much more than Asik?

The Howard clown saga continues. He's now 50-50. He's playing a game with either the Rockets or Lakers. If he goes ahead with Houston he gave up $30 million guaranteed. If he goes with LA, the fans might finally embrace him.

Surely he is doing this to place emphasis to the $30 million he's leaving on the table. If he switches back to LA he'll be the most hated man in Houston since Terry Bradshaw in his Steeler days.

He's gone..... Time for LA to reload. Kobe is at the end of his career, and so is Nash, with Gasol getting there quickly. Artest is about done, and none of the young guys wow anyone.

Let the Crybaby roll, LA will be alright in a season or 2. LBJ, Melo, and many others will be available in 2014. LA will land someone of marquee value. Thanks for nothing D-12. He made a mockery of playing the most elite center position in league history. Vlade Divac embraced the role more than 1/2 Heart Howard......

If I'm LA I try and get a Wall from Washington or someone like that and try to build for a possible big FA for 2014. The Clips and Warriors are both teams with young cores that will be good for several years. You have to try and build a young core now for that FA in 2014. Kobe, Nash, and Artest are probably not gonna be around for that many more years. Maybe a few years at most. Gasol is just a role player at this point. Not someone you can really rely on to carry a team. If you can use those guys to trade for a young star or some high draft picks or some young players that can facilitate a big free agent in 2014 which looks like a huge class.

Howard was a bad fit for LA. Especially with D'Antonio as the coach. Look at D'Antonio's entire career with centers and he really doesn't like using them except as jump shooters. Not saying that Howard handled the situation perfect. But seemed like he went to LA for all the wrong reasons instead of going somewhere that fit him and would build around him. LA if you look at their core is essentially a team way past it's prime right now.

I agree........

Shaq on Dwight's decision:

It was expected. We've all been in L.A., and not a whole lot of people can handle being under the bright lights. Everybody wants to do it, but when you get there, there are certain pressures. I think it was a safe move for him to go to a little town like Houston. That's right, little town. I said it.

Bill Plaschke on Dwight:

If the Lakers really wanted to keep Dwight, they would have kept him.

Not a bad spot for Howard. He's got a former Hall of Fame pivot man as a head coach and a proven defensive assistant in Sampson plus guys who represent outside threats. Howard with Asik off the bench gives them the best one-two defensive punch down the lane in the league.

As far as Shaq, he played in two of the same towns (Orlando and LA) as DH plus he toiled in four others (Miami, Boston, Cleveland and Phoenix) and Houston is bigger than five of cities he played in.

Nice article from Tramel.

* The Lakers’ lack of leadership. Quality ownership is the No. 1 factor in NBA success; the Lakers had it with Dr. Jerry Buss. There is no evidence that the Lakers have it with Buss’ heirs.

* The Lakers’ coaching. Mike D’Antoni is problematic for the Lakers; a terrible fit in many ways. And D’Antoni is problematic for Howard. Howard wasn’t comfortable in D’Antoni’s offense. It’s a players’ league. Coaches everywhere except San Antonio are just along for the ride.

* The Lakers’ arrogance. Kobe Bryant imploring to let him teach Howard “how to win.” Oh, please. This idea that the greatest players are somehow better people — stronger of will, more dedicated, tougher in the clutch — has got to stop. Kobe won titles when he had an all-star center. Shaq from 2000-02, Pau Gasol from 2009-10. When Kobe got older, his step was a tad slower and his endurance a tad less and his defense not quite as ferocious, not even an all-star center was enough to save him. And funny thing is, that strong will, and dedication, and mental toughness, are not slaves to age. Kobe trying to sell Howard on some kind of mojo was nonsense, and it’s quite possible that Howard saw through it.

* The Lakers’ roster. LeBron James left Cleveland seeking a better roster. Same reason Pau Gasol left Memphis. And same reason Howard is leaving LA.
This stuff happens all the time in the NBA. James Harden left Oklahoma City because he wanted to be a lead dog, and you can’t blame him. Kevin Garnett left Minnesota because he wanted to play for a winner, and you can’t blame him. Chris Bosh left Toronto because he wanted to play with certain players, and you can’t blame him.

Fact is if LA wanted to keep Howard they would have fired D'Antoni for one thing. But the core roster they have was also a huge hurdle to overcome for getting Howard back.

The media labeling players as "winners" and "losers" mind numbingly stupid.

Three years ago, there was another guy who had never won a title, had just gotten a coach fired, and was widely criticized for teh way he handled his free agency. He was labeled a "loser" by legions of mouth breathing twitter idiots, and the mainstream media. Three years later he has 2 NBA titles and is a "winner."

Dwight Howard will win titles if he ends up on the best team, or maybe if he's not on the best team but they get lucky with matchups or run above average. All of a sudden he'll be a "winner", despite doing nothing differently.
