D'Angelo Allen visiting this weekend

Oops, Allen is a nice player. But, I hope this doesn't mean that Goodman is slipping away.

If we get him, all four newcomers will be able to throw it down. Super athlete. Not a bad jump shot either.

Update on Savon Goodman. I'm not holding my breath:

Former four-star prospect Savon Goodman visited ASU over the weekend. An energetic 6-foot-6 power forward, Goodman spent his freshman season at UNLV, averaging 3.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in 9.1 minutes. He left the program last October because of off-season legal trouble. He spent last season at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, but did not play.

Goodman's coach at Indian Hills was Barret Peery, who recently joined ASU coach Herb Sendek's staff as an assistant coach. Goodman also is close to ASU signee Roosevelt Scott, who starred last season at Indian Hills.

My preference would be to sign an experienced PF rather than a HS player just because we need some imeediate help inside.

I still think we'll be fine inside. Spangler, Buford, Lattin, Bennett, and McNease is a solid group to work with. And if we sign a kid like Allen, he could be a small 4 if we had to go that route.

I don't want to sign a marginal JUCO type PF, a guy like Bennett, that will take minutes from our young guys, but only be marginally better. I don't think that helps our program. As long as Bennett improves some, and LK can make Buford/Lattin into players that can contribute this year, we should be fine.

I would rather have Allen, he has more height and athleticism than anyone in our backcourt.

With all due respect to those other players, I think Goodman is more than a "marginal" Juco player (he hasn't played in a Juco game) and has 3 years of eligibility left. He was a Parade AA and recruited by schools like UConn, KU, UCLA, USC, NC State, Villanova and was the #72 recruit his senior year.

I found this in his Scout bio where his team won the state championship and upset the team ranked #1 in the nation (he averaged 25.8 points, 14.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game as a senior). He also averaged over 9 minutes a game 3.6 points and 2.4 boards as a true freshman at UNLV and redshirted last year at Indian Hills which was the #1 ranked Juco in men's basketball.

"Goodman looks like he could play football as well as basketball. There is no better physical specimen in the class, and he uses that strength and athleticism to his advantage. Goodman loves to drive to the bucket and finish through contact. Also he attacks the glass. Shooting is a major growth area for Goodman has he can really struggle from beyond the arc and in the mid-range."

I just think the Sooners need an "enforcer" down low if they could somehow win out over ASU for his signature.

Here's a link from UCLA when he decommitted from Villanova:

You are right. The staff has been after Goodman for months. He very well could be he best player on the team, if we get him.

Since he didn't play last year at Indian Hills is there really a strong connection between the coach who is going to ASU?

My comment wasn't about Goodman. I think every Sooner fan would take Goodman over Allen. But as you said, things don't look good for Goodman ending up at OU. IF that is the case, I'd rather go after a kid like Allen, or nobody, then bring in a marginal JUCO, which is about all that is available at this point.

That's the million dollar question. Here are snippets I found:

Goodman’s role at UNLV was solely off the bench, but despite his nine or so minutes per game, there were consistent flashes of Goodman’s potential. Reports about UNLV’s practice, or observations during open gyms and workouts, gave the impression that Goodman could be an impact player if he just got the minutes.

RT @TheDrewster35: #UNLV's former forward Savon Goodman enjoyed his visit at Arizona State over the weekend. Keep an eye on this.

When OUHoops posted the part I have highlighted in bold several days ago, my optimism about signing Goodman went south in a hurry. ASU must really want this kid. That doesn't mean Peery was not a good hire. I have no idea what kind of an assistant he'll be under Sendek. It's just that hiring an Indian Hills assistant Goodman already has a relationship will be tough for OU to overcome.

That was a good move for ASU, not so good for OU. Sure hope I'm wrong!

As for Allen, I have already gone on record in saying that I'm all for signing him if we can.

This may be true but it is also possible the kid doesn't really like the coach or doesn't think he is a particularly good coach.

You're right, that is a possibility. But, it doesn't make sense to me that Sendek would hire an assistant the player he is recruiting doesn't like. I'm betting Peery's relationship with Goodman is one of the reasons he was hired in the first place.

OU may still come out the winner in the end. It's just that IMO, the odds of that happening took a serious hit when ASU hired Peery. I would love to be wrong!

I'm with you. But, ASU got the good Indian Hills guard earlier. Now they are after Goodman. Then in the fall there is still Longer's 7'0" cousin. It could turn out to be a productive hire.

you just rocked me with that realization...

We need Longar's cousin, IMO.

I think Allen doesn't leave norman without committing. Lon seals the deal this weekend.

I like him. I think he develops into a perimeter defensive stopper with a nice but somewhat limited offensive game.
