Declined NIT Bids

36+21 = 57

OU was ranked 53 in KP, barttorvik has us at 50, 68 in NET (which the committee does not care about as much), evanmiya has us at 68, ESPN BPI has us at 62.

So in some way we are one of: +4 in, +7 in, -5 out, or -11 out.

Clearly the NIT was not about having a sub-.500 team in.

Again, there are also a lot of teams who got auto bids who were well ahead of us, so we are talking way more than 57. For example -- do you think Texas was ahead of us? Duke? Purdue? Arizona? Memphis? Alabama? San Diego State? Marquette? That's just off the top of my head. That takes us into the mid-60s. And the committee absolutely cares about NET seeing as how IT IS THE NCAA's OWN NUMBER.

So we are 30+ spots out of the NCAA field and you want to suggest we were close?

I'm glad the NIT put us out of our misery. No need to go out at the hands of some double-directional school. Time to see if Moser can deliver on the recruiting trail. I'm guessing he can't but we'll see.

I just sat in a breakfast event in which the 2022 Tournament Chair and Joe Lunardi both spoke directly to our group (the Tourney Chair in person, Joe via Zoom). Trust me, we weren't close. And NET is used more as a seeding tool then an in/out tool.

JFC, dude...I provided you examples that actually helped your case here.

Not to mention, it shows we weren't close end of year for the NCAA tourney. NIT, absolutely close.

AGAIN -- Look at the bubble teams that got in:

LAST FOUR IN
Miss St - 47 NET
Pitt - 67 NET
ASU - 66 NET
Nevada - 37 NET

LAST FOUR OUT
OSU - 43 NET
Rutgers - 40 NET
UNC - 46 NET
Clemson - 60 NET

If the NET was the end all be all, they would have had OSU and Rutgers in. So they don't care as much as you want to think they do.

I’m not a big fan of the mental gymnastics going on in this thread, trying to justify us not sucking. We finished last in our conference and had a losing record. Those are the only stats we need to know. This season was a complete disaster and a failure. Any justification of how close (or not close) we were to making the postseason is a freaking joke.

Lol… ya, we didn’t get the chance to decline the NIT.

Damn … hope that wakes moser up.

I know that the last year Sherri Coale was the women's coach they went 12-12 and were invited to the WNIT, but Coale turned it down, which I believe she always did, in the few unlikely occasions they didn't make the NCAA tourney under her. So, I believe it's up to the coach, but if the students really want to play, I imagine depending on the coach they would play. I don't think it adds any value either, it certainly didn't for us last season.

Just a crummy year in OU men's sports, one I'll hopefully forget quickly.

If our women's sports weren't doing so well right now, I'd have little to look forward to as a hardcore college sports fanatic :(

I get it as regards the two primary sports, but baseball and gymnastics were both runners-up for the national titles and golf is a top 20 program (top 10, I think).

Would beating Sam Houston State and Villanova in the non-conference put OU in the NCAA Tournament?

Final record of 17-15 instead of 15-17?

Not even close. That would maybe have bumped our NET, what, five to 10 spots? Would still have left us about 15-20 spots behind an OSU team that whipped our butt three times.

lol ok .. 15 to 20 spots behind osu at 17-15 um no

if OU won those games they would have been about 1 win from the NCAA tourney

Golf won it… 2 yrs ago? I think.

Gym #1 right now…baseball actually on a 9/10 game winning streak.

Then ya got the women’s teams…

Do you even try to pay attention to facts? Our road win over ISU temporarily improved our NET by 10 spots. A home win over Sam Houston would maybe move us a few spots, and win at Nova obviously wouldn’t help as much as the ISU game. So those two combined would maybe get us to the mid to upper 50s. And yep, that’s still about 15 spots behind OSU, and they would still have had a massive head to head edge.

it also would take away those loses ..

Do you???

Our worst loss would be to #61 Tech and #38 OSU (KP, which I know you ignore). You take out two losses to #69 and #60 and we almost mirror West Virginia with better wins.

(in this hypothetical)

Records
WV - 19-14 (7-11)
OU - 17-14 (5-13)

Worst Losses
WV - 61 Tech, 53 OU (which would be close to 30 range), 38 OSU
OU - 61 Tech, 38 OSU (3)

Best Wins
WV - 23 ISU (2), 24 KSU
OU - 3 Bama, 17 WVU, 23 Iowa St

SOS
WVU - 5
OU - 2

Q1 Record
WVU - 6-13
OU - 7-13 (Nova makes that a Q1 win)

It is almost identical. I think that UT win or the KU win makes OU a 10/11 seed then. Again this is all hypothetical and I am not advocating for OU being in, before some posters come in and say...close games aren't wins...yada yada.

So now the argument is shifting to if we had won those two games AND won at least one other game against a top 10 team. Let’s just keep the fantasy going.

Also, you ignore all the other reasons West Virginia was a mile ahead of us in the NET. They are in the top 25 of every predictive metric and top 30 of the result-based metrics. We are between 53 and 62. You continue to hammer KenPom. Check out their team sheet. No one ever mentions that on here, but it’s something the NCAA emphasizes heavily. But yeah, a win over SH and Nova would have surely bumped us 30 spots and gotten us right next to WVA. Lol.

Now, a fair debate would be this: if we had any other Big 12 coach on our sideline, would we have blown the late leads in those two games? I’d answer that with a resounding, “no.” And who knows, maybe if we don’t choke those away, we would have played with more confidence in the close league games in the first month of conference play. But living in reality, none of those things happened.

Was clearly backing up BoulderSooner's statement below with those stats

If you really think that that statement is wildly far off, I don't know what to tell you.
