Denversooner nailed it - Players League

That's right. The benefits that unions have fought for over the past century are enjoyed by all non union employees too. So maybe instead of the mindless naive anti union rhetoric people can pull their head out and realize unions have been a great asset to the USA. Way more good than bad and it's not even close.

By the way I have never been a member of a union. But any thoughtful unbiased objective person understands that collective bargaining works and without it exploitation is guaranteed.

Sure, I don't think anyone will disagree with that. Unions have been great, but they had their time and place.

To me the biggest thing is...what makes any of you think that any one of those 12 teams would be in Oklahoma...my guess is none.

Tulsa has a pretty nice arena that I'm sure is nicer than most non-NBA arenas they would be playing in. I would bet they could get the Thunders pseudo team to play there.

I don't see it that way at all. Unions didn't invent all of those employee benefits, if any of them. Really, you listed "weekends off" as a union thing? Sheesh.

Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. Brought to you by unions.

...I don't know of a single person not in a union that thinks they benefit society today.

You do now.

Union workers have it WAY better than most normal workers. THAT is my problem with unions. They probably did work at one time, but I don't know of a single person not in a union that thinks they benefit society today.

I have never been in a labor union and at this late date have no intention of working let lone working within a union.

However, the American labor movement built the middle class in this country. As union membership has dwindle, so has the middle class.

So, now you are aware of two.

Although I may think that many of their tactics are counterproductive and self-serving, the American worker would be in a much worse place, if not for unions. Though some unions perpetuate a system that holds tenure above merit, many unions are the only thing protecting workers from unsafe work environments for employees. Unions are designed to support their members. Nothing more; nothing less. Those that are not in an industry that requires union protection may see unions as selfish and antiquated, but they are not meant to be an altruistic entity. It may seem reasonable from the outside looking in to say that the auto unions should have made sacrifices for the good of the industry, but that is not their place. They are there to support the workers.

I cannot say that I am necessarily a supporter of unions, because I have never been a part of one. I can see that they are clearly necessary for some industries.

lol at this thread and this idea. If the players are *****ing about not making enough money, they damn sure aren't going to be making more money in this "new league".

And if they are worried about the lower level players not making as much money, b/c we know the stars still will, then this "new league" will not help out those players b/c they would be jobless.

This will never happen. Stern isn't bluffing, the players are idiots if they try this. Check that, the players are bigger idiots if they try this

They aren't. They have already agreed to make less money. It is the owners that are complaining about not making enough money.

there have been quotes about the new salaries they would have with a new deal.

Bottom line is creating a new league is going to be worse for them.

Rumors have said that MJ himself is the owner that wants players to get an even lesser percentage that 50 percent of league revenues.

Soooo... if one of the greatest players of all time is giving the finger to the current players, can you imagine how much the stars would pwn and abuse the lessers in a player-controller league?

Or perhaps, it's just MJ being MJ.

As much as I admire the players for not immediately kowtowing, pretty much THIS.

It's their counter move, but I would be surprised if they really thought the logistics all the way through.

If they go through with this, I guess we'll get an idea of exactly who - among the top end talent - is really in it for the players, or just for the money.

The reason labor unions have declined so far in numbers is that they largely made their members' employers unprofitable. No doubt they did some good a century ago, but it's a different era now. Too often unions engage in violence and intimidation such as in the recent attack on the Port of Longview, Washington. Many of the New York and Illinois unions are still controlled by organized crime.

Public employee unions are a whole other level of disaster. California and Illinois face bankruptcy due to pensions owed to RETIRED state workers. Cali has $500 BILLION in unfunded liabilities to state employee pensions. There are cities in Cali whose municipal government has literally ceased to exist because their pension liabilities to unionized workers alone were more than 100% of all tax revenue. There are areas in Cali where a firefighter can start work at age 45, work 5 years, then retire at 50 with almost 100% of salary for life.

Many states force their employees to join the SEIU whether they want to or not. Then they withhold money from all employee paychecks and hand it to the unions as dues. A recent UNBELIEVABLE story emerged in Michigan:

1) State says every employee must join the SEIU.

2) State forces every employee to pay dues to the SEIU.

3) State declares that anybody providing care to their disabled child must register as a professional health care provider.

4) State pretends that anybody receiving Medicaid benefits for providing care to a disabled child is a state government employee being paid (IE Medicaid benefits) for services rendered the state.

5) State forces them all to join the SEIU.

6) State takes some of the Medicaid money from poor people caring for a disabled child and hands it to the SEIU as dues.

Disgusting.

I like this idea a lot better than the one where they dismantle the union and we have to hear about lawsuits on Sportscenter for the next year.

Which network would be willing to step up and pizz off major league sports though? I didn't just say "NBA" there, because crossing one pro league in the players' favor might have a negative impact on their relationships with other sports leagues.

My guess: Versus.

the leagues need the networks. not the other way around
