Tonight was a big setback....I don't think that anyone would argue with that. I was as guilty as anyone with respect to thinking that this team could finish 2nd in a great Big 12 conference this year. There is still a mathematical/pragmatic chance of that happening......but if we all take a good, hard look at this team, we realize our faults can be tough to overcome in order to do that. We are a small, quick, jump-shooting team. If we aren't hitting our shots, then wins are going to be tough to come by....against anyone on our schedule.
We are what we are this year. We will be able to give practically anyone fits when our shots are falling and we are playing at our pace. However, the emphasis for the remainder of the season (and in the offseason) should be on defense (team and individual). This isn't big news to anyone.....we have simply got to get better at the defensive end. That is our next step in becoming a really good to great team. When our shots aren't falling (like tonight), it would be a luxury to fall back on "lock down" and pressure defense. I see glimpses of it at times, but becoming more consistent should be this team's goal moving forward.
These young men play hard and I love their effort. They aren't that far away. But with maturity comes more consistency and we can hope to expect more commitment on that end of the floor as we progress.
As for this year, I hope we can get on a run and exceed all of our expectations in the postseason, but for the time being, I'm going to try and enjoy watching these young men improve.....as much as it drives crazy.
