Did anybody watch the 30 for 30 on the Big East last night?

Pretty interesting. I'm too young to remember how that league got started, but it was a neat story, and I know understand why so many folks up that way were so upset about the league breaking up.

That said, the think I found the most interesting, is that OU has never played Georgetown in basketball. Seems weird we've never met up even once.

I watched it. Thought it was pretty good too. I was pretty young the years that most of the doc covered. (Born in 80) I thought they spent a lot of time on Gtown and Cuse but can see why. I didn't know a lot about Pearl Washington that dude just got buckets. Looked like people definitely got their money's worth watching him.

To this day though when I hear Big East I think of my dad telling me, and I'm not sure how true this is, that one time Billy Tubbs said something along the lines of that if he had trouble going to sleep at night he'd turn on a Big East game and their game pace would put him to sleep in 5 minutes.

Was this (bold) mentioned in the 30/30? That seems odd if so.

OU tried to hire John Thompson when Tubbs was hired. They went after Thompson with aggressive offers but he was not interested.

It was NOT mentioned. The show spent so much time on GT (and Cuse) that I decided to go check out Soonerstats.com to find out if we had ever played GT, and we had not.

Thompson might have been a very good coach, but I'm glad he didn't end up at OU. I'm not a fan of the man.

I think it worked out pretty good for us, but you have to wonder "what if" we had Ewing and Tisdale together? Not sure if Ewing would have come to Oklahoma but you never know. He may have already been at GTown by then so wouldn't have been an option but other studs he had at GTown at the time could have been here with Tisdale.

I don't feel either way about him. Don't like or dislike him. At the time, I liked the fact he was a minority coach and was successful.

The first year I vividly remember watching OU in the tourney was when we lost to Memphis State in the Elite 8. I guess that was '85? I was 10.

But ithat was the same year the Big East had 3 of the final four.
And we could have been right there with them.

But anyway, yeah, I remember Pearl Washington. Very good college player, didn't quite pan out in the pros, from what I remember.

The Big East's big mistake was not taking football seriously in the 80's and not adding Penn State when they could have, and not adding Florida State when they could have and on and on. Can you imagine that league circa 2000, with FSU and Penn State in it, to go along with Miami, WVU, Pitt and the others?

Really liked the 30/30. Had no idea about the story and all of the great coaches there at one time. When PJ Carlisimo and Pitino are in the middle that speaks volume. Also interesting to see ESPN and the Big East teamed up to make each other relevant.
