I thought for sure Jo or Ellenburg wpould be player of the week after last weeks performances. Not to be. They gave it to big un down at Wacko.

I can understand Griner get the award because she had a great week but I don't understand Brittney Martin getting it too. Aaryn had a much better week than she did. I think Jo did too.

Just think if the football pollsters knew that after last season, they could no longer vote for any SEC team ever again.

That's about how it will be now for Big 12 player of the week. They know they're likely not gonna have another player like Grimey for awhile.

Well, Jo and Aaryn are OUr players of the week....GREAT job, Ladies!!! Keep it up !!!!

That's because Mulkey played Griner late into the game, even though they were up by over 20 with 2 minutes left in the game. Mulkey knew Aaryn scored 26 in both games, and she wanted Baylor to get the award outright. There's no denying it.

Ellenberg played more total minutes in her 2 games this week than Griner did in hers. Theres no denying that, either.

I am curious about what the reasoning would be for picking Ellenberg over Griner for POW?

Griner faced a MUCH better level of competition this week and she played fewer total minutes than ellenberg did. But even so, Griner still had better production in almost every statistical category.......

total points - advantage griner
shooting % - advantage griner
free throws - advantage griner
rebounds - advantage griner
assists - advantage griner
blocks - advantage griner

Ellenberg did get more steals, though.

gsooner2...... do you believe that Ellenberg deserved to be picked ahead of Griner last week? If so, what is the basis for your opinion? Is it just because she plays for OU?

Griner was selected as the national player of the week last week. But yet, some people think that she did not deserve big 12 player of the week? That is not very logical.

No it isn't logical. She shouldn't have been selected national player of the week either ;)

Griner has been Big 12 POW every week in January. Surely someone else had a good enough week to win this award. Anyone but Griner.

See my comments on your comparisons for the last two games last week. OU played Texas and Baylor, Baylor played Iowa State and OU:

WRONG! AE played 62 minutes. Griner played 66 minutes!

total points - advantage griner Really? AE had 55 total points vs 37 points for Griner!)
shooting % - advantage griner (Easier to shoot high % when you are 3 ft from the basket vs shooting majority of shots from BTA). . . but even with all that, the percentages favored Griner by ONLY 51.7% vs 45.9% for AE!
free throws - advantage griner (How do you figure? AE made 12-14 FT her last two games vs 7-11 for Griner).
rebounds - advantage griner (I wonder why? 5-7 vs 6-8, duh)
assists - advantage griner (Guess what? You're wrong again! AE had 5 assists to Griner's 2. Do you even bother to check anything before spewing your lies?)
blocks - advantage griner (See rebounds above, slight height advantage)

Ellenberg did get more steals, though.

EDIT: I just noticed that the thread was about the POW for Jan 14th, not the last week.
However, my above arguments still are valid: Griner has an enormous physical advantage over other players like Ellenberg, so she SHOULD get more rebounds, more points and better FG percentage (a 3 foot shot is a helluva lot easier than a 3-pointer).

I haven't seen who gets the POW this week (1-28), but it'll probably be Griner again, due to the media's love affair with her.

There's also the fact that Baylor goes much deeper than we do because of all the injuries. My point to True Colors was directed at the fact that Griner played until almost the end of the game to pad the numbers when up by 20+ points. Mulkey isn't fooling me one bit!

You guys should go back to the archives of 2005-2009 when CP3 was at OU and find the articles where Mulkey said "we have a national championship and they do not." That's when I lost pretty much all respect I had for her.

I wonder why the Big 12 has not announced the selection of the women's POW for last week? I see that they announced the men's POW, but no announcement for the women...

More likely the local news outlets didn't consider it particularly earth-shattering news (the release is dated 1/28). Freshman POW was Imani McGee-Stafford of Texas. POW was <drum roll...wait for it...wait for it> Brittney Griner of Baylor.

Still waiting for somebody to explain why Griner was less deserving of the POW award than Ellenberg. So far only Blackwell Sooner has made a case(his reasoning was flawed, however).

The national media(aka, non Baylor people) thought that Griner was deserving of the NATIONAL player of the week award. However, somehow she does NOT deserve conference player of the week. That is some good logic.

Ellenberg had more steals than Griner, but Griner had more points, rebounds, blocks, etc. etc. Griner even had more assists, even though Ellenberg is a guard.

Evidently there is some sort of problem about Griner playing too many minutes.

Of course, there is no problem whatsoever with the number of minutes that Ellenberg had, even though she played more minutes than Griner did!
