It struck me as we were all discussing next season on another thread that it might be possible that Sherri retires after next season.

Here are my thoughts:

She has 20 in already.

She likes to write.

She is a valuable resource to OU and would easily be given a high-profile, decent paying job.

All of her special girls -- Maddie, Peyton, Kaylon will be gone.

A new group will have had a year.

She hates to recruit (so she has said).

She doesn't like the AAU/summer camp scene. She isn't going into that cesspool.

She's in the Hall of Fame.

She doesn't want to wait around and face possibly getting fired.

She's 50+ (wish I looked as good as she does a that age).

The only thing that might keep her coming back might be the one goal she hasn't achieved -- a national championship.

Just something that crossed my mind.
I could see it happening, I could see it not happening.

What opinions and thoughts do you have?

Jody Conradt comes to mind when you put it that way. She was inducted into the women's hall of fame and then went to the sidelines in Texas womens basketball.

I think she would make sure Ross had a job or retired. I am sure they would bring in a up and coming coach that relates to recruits and is involved with social media. I think she will be around 5-10 more years.

Most coaches coach well in to there 60s I can't see Sherri hanging them up any time soon...

First, I think that the people around Sherri are very positive. They don't read message boards and could care less. They have their own goals, and those are being accomplished magnificently by Sherri. Boren has been adamant about his search for an image, and Sherri has one of the best images in the nation. This is about a university, not a basketball team. The strongly suspect that Boren and Castiglione would give Sherri a lifetime contract. She is exactly what they want.

I don't think Sherri has any interest at all about what the opinions expressed on a message board might be. She has her own ideas about how to do a job, ideas that she has had since she was the tigress that we have read about. I suspect that she is disappointed that not every player has the drive that she and Stacy had, and I think she will continue to try to instill that drive as long as she has hope that it can be done. If she had players every year with that type of drive, we might be in the Elite Eight or Final Four every year.

But, she also has other priorities. Sherri knows that this is a part of life, and she is a teacher. She still respects the teachers that mentored her. She wants each of her players to reach their dreams, their ultimate potential, whether that be playing for the San Antonio Stars or treating servicemen as a physician in Iraq. Of whom are you more proud?

I watch a youtube video of a player that won a title for Baylor, and she is trying to start some sort of basketball clinic. Her English wouldn't permit her to enroll in a college if it weren't for her basketball skills. She has, essentially, no future. Meanwhile, Stacy has been a fixture of various sportscasts for years because she is an excellent spokesman for the game. Which benefited more from their association with the university, and which university served its athlete better?

Sherri will be here as long as she wishes with the full endorsement of Boren and Castiglione.

Besides, I think Sherri wants to see what she can do with a 6-9 post.

Nonsense. Such extremism is so unnecessary.

We have always known Sherri is very competitive and hated to lose. What we don't know is, how hot does that fire still burn. Does she still have the fire to take the steps to get back to another final four? Is she satisfied to play for 3rd place in the Big 12?

As Atlanta pointed out, Stoops was not happy with the fall of his team and he took some drastic measures to get back on track for another national championship. Will Sherri do the same thing? Some have said it is not likely that she will be more demanding of the players, make staff changes, or out recruit Kim for some elite players. If true, how are we going to improve? Sherri is a smart lady. Certainly she knows one cannot continue to do the same things and expect to end up with a different result. Will she follow Stoops or continue down the same path? Once we see which road she chooses it will let us know how hot that flame still burns. I hope it's white hot.

When Sherri isn't winning at a high level, her groupies try to define the job into something else. All i know is that Joe C. will probably fire a baseball coach this year for not competing at a high level.

I don't think she will coach into her 60's, but she will probably be around for 5 or 6 more years. I think she wants to see how Nancy and Ana work out with the other cast of kids coming in.

Interesting how you skill set is so astute that you can watch one video of a player and accurately assess that player future after basketball. Many former players don't necessarily speak well in front of a camera and I know a couple of self made millionaires that graduated from college and speak about as bad of English as is possible. Yet the were extremely successful as a businessman and as a person. Your mere mentioning of a Baylor player in this thread in such a demeaning way is nothing more than the manifestation of you dislike for Kim.

To date their is a lot of similarity to Jody Conradt's career and Sherri's career. Jody was extremely successful on a national and conference level only to fall off in her success on the court in her later years. She won 10 SWC regular season championships and two Big 12 championships in her career. She won 8 consecutive championships in the eighties and only 4 championships the last 15 years of her career.

Sherri appears to be in the twilight of her career as well as she won 6 of 10 conference championships 2000-2009 but has now gone 7 consecutive seasons with zero championships. For certain not a positive trend.

I see Sherri having reached the stage of her career where she needs to turn it around asap and win some championships or she will be remembered by the OU fan base as a coach that was "over the hill" like Jody Conradt when she retired. Fortunately that choice is Sherri's as she can determine how she wants to be remembered. She can roll up her sleeves and be a coach that went out "on top with a few championships or over the hill with no championships in a decade or more". For certain she is at that crossroads.

Sherri is 51...I can't imagine she is ready to retire. Also as long as OU continues to make the tourney on a regular basis she isn't getting pushed out. 17 straight tourneys is not an easy feat to accomplish and administration recognizes that.

OU is no doubt not as talented as we were during the Paris twins, Drob, etc. time period. Our drop in performance reflects the drop in getting difference making recruits. That is where we have to improve.

Agree! And I might add...some on this forum act as though every player that arrived on the steps of SC's program was illiterate, didn't know how to journal or do much of anything else until SC got a hold of them. Many if not most arrived able to communicate effectively with the media and others. Putting down others is not an honorable/respectable way to glorify self/your favorite team.

Good post!

This is pretty funny....

First of all, I can't imagine she would leave before VV and Gabbi and probably, Maddie leave. Thats two seasons with probably our two best players from this season, she'll be there for both. Not sure if anyone caught the interview where Maddie talks about VV and says it will be fun playing with her, i think she said for the next couple of years but it was along those lines. So until that class graduates in two years, this shouldn't be considered. And after that class graduates, we'll probably be pretty happy with where we're at, and what we have.

0101-Please note I said after certain players leave. I think she might/may feel like Maddie and Kay-Kay are an end to a certain era of players, like Hook, Hand and Eilenberg.

What does Kim Mulkey and her program have to do with this post? I think it's a good question but some are ok with just making the tournament while others would like to win a national championship.

Nailed it!

You've got to remember that this board is a cesspool of negativity. Very few OUWBB fans outside of this board feel that negativity. Syb's post, which was blasted as "extremism" pretty much reflects the feeling of the vast majority of fans, as well as the administration.

Atlanta used the word, "extremism," because I used it as a criticism of one of his negative posts.

syb,
criticism implies critical thought. everything you post is the same cult of personality, rah rah, Sherri is infallible religious like pandering.
