ESPN analyics guy Seth Walder isn't sold on the Sooners

While the efficiency metric is somewhat concerning, the premise that we're a 1 man team is laughable. This is one of the deepest teams we've had. Hardly a 1 man show if you ask me.

Meh. you could dig into every team this way. KU? No quality depth. WVU? Terrible in the halfcourt? Duke? Can't defend man to man. etc. etc.

Every team in college basketball has weaknesses.

I am as big an analytics guy as you will find, but this is nonsense. Their model has never seen a player like Trae Young, because there has never been a player like Trae Young. Anyone capable of analysis would admit this, but instead we've got buffoons like this making declarative statements because they can't interpret what their statistics mean.

well, there are good points and inaccuracies to what he is saying.

Lon purposefully runs everything thru Trae. He has said and done this from the beginning and recruited Trae with that in mind (according to that greasy Calipari). That doesn't mean the team has no other talent - far from it. It just means he's the general out there. the true point guard.

We rely more on trae's setups and passes than plays and sets, but we could do otherwise. I think that's why Shepherd looks a bit lost. Trae uses his 1-on-1 skills to contort the defense and get an advantage then he can shoot, finish, or pass. Shepherd's not the same kind of player. They have to get some motion going to open some angles or set a pick. We can/could do the latter too.

Meh. He's also looking at ESPN's BPI, other metrics, such as Ken Pomeroy's, like us significantly better than BPI does.

We all know OU is far from a one-man team. That said, I’d like to see them play a little better when Trae is resting.

Seems like he’s combining opinion (one man team) with analystics (bpi)

I hope the “when” is sometime after this season. Maybe next decade sometime.

Don’t care. If we lose tonight some people will write us off prematurely. If we win some will still have questions and some could overrate us. Time will tell about all these.

I don’t get it. He’s trying to slam OU by saying they’ll only be 11-7 in the Big 12 this year.

Sign me up for that!!

I agree....I believe he started with a premise in mind and then attempted to build an argument around it. ESPN BPI is not taken all that seriously in most metrics circles anyways.

Kenpom is the best advanced metric rating system out there for college basketball....IMO. It has us at 13....which is about where I think we are in actuality, although I think we are in the 9-11 range based on eye test. We are a great offense, but can improve our Kenpom ranking with strides on the defensive side of the ball (currently ranked 44).

OU has flaws, but I would trust that Lon is addressing those every day in practice.

Counting tonight's game, we have 13 more Big XII games, plus the Alabama game. He thinks we'll have 8 wins and 6 losses the rest of the way?

Espn’s analytics are beyond pathetic these days. They have cut out almost all of their behind the scenes people and the quality ones have found better jobs elsewhere. All hat and no cattle.

thats an excellent point tiny. I have noticed that too. their info isn't near what it usetabe.

Not sure how he is wrong. OU couldn't stop me defensively. And if Trae has a game where he only plays at 60% effectiveness, OU moat likely will lose (in a fashion similar to the Villanova game). OU is mediocre when Trae rests. Hopefully they can get that rectified.

No doubt about it, this team needs to rely less on perimeter shooting and more on defense. Still, they have found a way to pull out some huge wins this season by making the right plays when the chips are down.

Can they continue to do that? Not likely. There’s bound to come a time when even a player like Trae Young can’t do enough to win a close one. Let’s hope it’s not tonight. KSU always plays OU tough, especially in Manhattan.

Other than TY OU isn't a very talented team..we all know that. 11-7 in the big 12 isn't something that can't happen for this team. We all know OU will go as far as TY can take us. This is a year for OU to make a run with most of the blue bloods down a little.
