Fitzgerald

Cam and Grooms didn't play much either. I won't pretend I can coach better than Kruger but I sure would have liked to see Fitzgerald, Cam and Grooms get a little more opportunity to play in that game. I am sure Kruger had reasons for what he did and if he shared them they would probably make sense.

Cam only played 1 minute less than his season average.

Both Fitz and Cam lost minutes to Osby, who played 37 minutes last night, for good reason. M'Baye actually played less minutes than his season average. But Osby played 9 more. Just wasn't a good matchup for Fitz.

I'm guessing Grooms lost minutes, mostly, b/c he was wasn't a good defensive matchup either, given the size and athleticism of SDS's guards. Given that Cousins played pretty well, his size/defense/athleticism gave him an edge. Grooms also lost minutes in the first half b/c of foul trouble.

Kruger did explain it. He said he wanted Osby in the game and at least for this game, Fitz was Osby's sub.

When Cam came in, he was out of control most of the time. Grooms and Pledger were in the dog house pretty bad Tuesday in practice. Kruger jerked the redshirts off both of them and banished them to the scout team. Cousins and Buddy got at least equal minutes if not more with the 1st team. This came a point when they were working on SD St. O And D.

That, to me, is unreal. We are talking about the pinnacle of both their athletic careers. What a time to what, I don't know, it must have been either lack of effort or bad attitudes? I'd be interested to hear why too. What is going on inside their pea brains? Good riddance...

Well, it is interesting watching a Kruger practice. From time to time the staff will go into a good cop bad cop routine. Not often, but when interest or effort is lacking. Crutchfield or Hill will be the bad cop. Kruger always the good cop.

Tuesday, Kruger was bad cop and there was scant evidence of good cop. Practice is scripted to the degree that the practice is broken into several timed segments coinciding with what Kruger wants to accomplish that day. Any watchers present are given a paper with the days activities and times.

It list every activity with the starting time and time allotted for completion. An example might be Offense vs SD St. defense 3:10 -3:30 Free Throws 3:30 - 3:40 Defenses vs SD St. Offense 3:40 - 4:00. ect. ect. ect. From starting time to finish time, they stick to the schedule. They might work on something every day till they get it. But, they only work on it during the scheduled alloted time.

Kruger had been grinding on both of them all day and I don't know the history of what brought it on. Then when it got to the segment of putting offense in against SD St. defense, Kruger perceived a lack of effort, or interest and got pretty fired up. They had to repeat sets a couple of times for their benefit and Kruger bagged his limit and shipped them off to the scout team. He brought in Buddy and Cousins so that he could finish in the allotted time.
 
That kind of stuff happens all the time.

Who was it that was routinely kicked out of practice and told to go home by Kelvin?

Seems like even Kevin Bookout left practice in a huff once, if I remember correctly.

You wouldn't expect two starting SR's to be pulling crap like this going into the NCAA Tournament.

It doesn't happen all the time with Kruger. This was like what he did to Calvin. Calvin deserved it and so did every one else that got that deep under Kruger's skin. To be fair, I've seen Hornbeak and M'Baye suffer similar fates early in the season.
 
I'm not at all surprised that LK banished two of his seniors to the second team for failing to give it their best or follow instructions in practice last week. Lon is an old school coach who expects maximum effort on every play. I can tell you for sure that he and Steve Henson played that way. I remember them well. So, why should they expect any less?

We may lose an occasional recruit who doesn't want to work hard or expects to have everything handed to them on a silver platter. That's okay, we already know how players like that turn out.

That's interesting, thanks for sharing. I admire coaches that don't let guys just screw off and then reward them later.

Thanks for the info. It's amazing to hear that the fans get handouts of the practice "agenda", pretty cool.

I'm also disappointed to hear that those two wouldn't do everything in their power to work their tails off in preparation for their first tourney game in three years. Sad to hear, and Ro and the crew deserved better.
 
Bet Lon wouldn't recruit someone with attitude issues like that. He inherited these guys. In Lon we trust!!!
 
He recruited Grooms. Grooms had a great attitude. I think Grooms, Fitzgerald and Clark all had outstanding attitudes this year. They could have pouted when their minutes were reduced but they didn't.
