Fran Fraschilla sizes up Oklahoma moving forward

I agree with Fran. Next year's team will have just as much talent on paper as the team Buddy, Isaiah and Ryan were part of when they were sophomores. The only question is, and it's a big one, can the players on next year's team match the work ethic of the group who took us to a Final Four two years later?

Our returning players have a lot of work to do. Every player on the team, with the possible exception of Doolittle, needs to learn how to box out on the boards. McGusty needs to improve his handles so he can be more consistent.

Lattin will be more effective on offense if he develops a couple of post moves with his back to the basket. Hard to believe a senior to be post player is not much of a threat to score down low unless it's on a put back or a lob.

McNeace needs to develop a mean streak. He's too passive to be the dominant player he could be if he made up his mind to be more aggressive instead of allowing himself to be pushed around, even by smaller, less talented players. Spending most of the summer in the weight room and eating everything in sight would do wonders for Jamuni and Khadeem.

Odomes simply needs to go back to his high school roots when shooting threes and scoring from the perimeter were routine for him. That's all I've got. Maybe someone else can add to my "advice."

yeah...I like our "talent" but def need some toughness under the bucket.

If ya look on the King's website and look up Buddy...his fr yr he avg like 7 pts and 3 rb's I think. I'd have to look but I'm sure we had "better" Sr's overall than now with Buddy's Fr yr.

Lattin - good off game outside the paint, but man it's so obvious...McNeace nothing but hooks...wish we could blend them! lol

Doolittle/Shepard/McGusty..all very solid and just keep improving.

Hoping Young's presence will allow more room for these guys to roam.

Odomes...NEEDS to shoot outside.

Hoping the 2 bigs can provide some help as well.

LAST but not least...develop some SLOB's and BLOB's !!!!! lol

Don't really agree on Odomes... I think he can be a really great Sooner if he just starts hitting 80% or better from the foul line. That's his game. If he practices his free throw stroke enough he may also be a little more potent from the 3pt line, but that should be his focus (foul line).

Slashing, finishing at the rim, free throw shooting. That's his game.

Odomes definitely needs to practice shooting threes until he is confident. Confident enough that he wants to shoot them.....that it's the easiest way for him to score. When he doesn't want to shoot, an opponent will allow him to shoot all day. They will sag off of him, thereby denying him his only other alternative...driving to the basket. Which leads to turnovers and charging fouls.
If he can't shoot the three, he doesn't really add much to our offense. And when his offense suffers, his defense is usually not too far behind.
So....he needs to practice his outside shot, his free throws, and his ball handling skills. He still needs to practice his moves to the right hand.

The team needs to learn how to break a press, how to get open on an out-of-bounds play. It seems too many of our players want to run towards the player throwing it in bounds. That's why a lot of our players catch the ball under the opponents goal on the full court press. This mostly falls on the coaching.....they need to teach our players better or find players who can follow the coaching.

Rebounding needs to improve. Too many times we have no one under the basket to rebound, or only one player. The rest are watching from the perimeter or starting to fall back to the defensive end. I would think at least two players need to go to the glass and depending on the opponent, sometimes three or four. Strength and better positioning need to be addressed also.

And our bigs and guards need to improve on their switch defending the pick-n-roll. Too many times this year, their big would be left by himself to roll to the basket unguarded. And our big and the guard would stay with the opponent's guard. It happened time after time.:facepalm

And I would like to see some new defensive sets.. Until we get more experience and a set of players that are comfortable running the match-up zones, we will have trouble. Experience should help our defense.

Every position on the floor, except Lattin and Muni need to learn to shoot the three. Everybody we played in the league this year had players who could hit the three if they were left wide-open. I was pretty confident in McGusty and Doolittle if they had a good shot. The rest were iffy.

JMO . it's like noses.;)

tooney, you addressed one topic that drove me crazy the entire season. I don't understand why OU gift wrapped far too many defensive rebounds for our opponents by sending everyone to the other end of the floor and making no attempt whatsoever to get an offensive rebound?

I know all about the importance of getting back on defense to defend your opponent in transition. But that's not what we're dealing with here. It makes no sense to run our offense to get an open shot, only to abandon the shooter as soon as the shot is released by leaving no one on the offensive end to rebound a miss, and I do mean NO ONE. As you pointed out, it happened a lot throughout the season.

But, to be honest, that fits this team's rebounding MO perfectly. Rebounding is mostly about effort and wanting the ball more than your opponent. What's worse than making a half-ass attempt on the boards? Making no attempt at all. That may also explain why a 6' 7" true freshman led the team in rebounding.

Things will have to be better next year as I said before I don't know how much better. We all seen some of the worse basketball at times played at OU in a while. We seen some good things at times..Next year should be more of the good instead of the bad. OU good sneak in the NCAA come March..who knows
