Goff not going to class?

Identical points per game.

Joakim had a 3 rebound per game average.

Thompson did have an edge in assists (about 1.3 more), but also had more turnovers (0.7 difference).

Joakim wasn't significantly better as a shot blocker, either, which is surprising given his size.

Really, the only significant difference is in rebounding. Thompson was a mediocre (at best) rebounder, while Joakim was solid.

Edit: should read Joakim had a 3 rebound per game advantage. He led the team with nearly 8 per game. Thompson was a bit over 4.

Call me captain.

I've watched Hawaii play a few times and Joakim is waaaaay better than Thompson. He's more athletic, more active and much more of an legitimate inside presence.

His stats against the best competition he's faced:

BYU: 12 pts 12 reb
Florida St.: 2 pts 7 reb
Mississippi St.: 9 pts 11 reb
Utah St: 8 pts 3 reb

For the season he's averaging 9.1 ppg and 8.3 rebounds. There has to be some reason why we didn't recruit him.

Maybe Capel was/is as mesmerized by that Thompson photo as I am, and decided he had to study this new basketball species personally.
