I figured I would pass along some info from someone that is an actual journalist covering OU rather than "BigRedRon69USA" on some message board.

Guerin Emig: Ran this by my best source today. Response: "No." FWIW. RT @ousoonerfan15: Hearing anything in regards to Pastner being leading candidate?

Nice of him to take a shot at a message board poster. Message board posters know more about this stuff and know it sooner than journalists do nine times out of ten.

Apparently, OU is a good enough job to get leverage for coaches, but not good enough for them to come here.

Pretty sure SeniorSooner was the one who took the shot at message board posting and not Emig.

Every big OU story in the last 5-7 years has been broken on the message boards before the news media.

Right now, I have far more faith in certain message board posters than I do in the OK news media.

Don't show that to ctsooner on soonerscoop. He'll rant and then stop posting his inside info for about 12 hours.

I'm just tired of people posting "reports" on message boards/blogs/twit with impunity. That is not to say there aren't some message board posters that pass along reliable info, but I'm much more inclined to listen to someone that is actually held accountable (to a certain degree) for what they report.

Correct, but you have to be able to separate the wheat from the chaff. Message boards/twitter are great for getting breaking news if you have a decent BS detector.

If you follow the actual writers/reporters on twitter like Goodman from Fox sports, Emig of the Tulsa World, Gottlieb, etc then Twitter is a great way to get info. Its when you see the random tweets of Joe_6packforMarquette...

I have seen more worthless drivel "retweeted" over the past few days to last me a lifetime.

That is the advantage and disadvantage of message board insiders. No accountability means that they will share any information they have. It means they will break the story first because the source doesn't need to be as solid, but also that they will break some stories that turn out to be false. I think it is best to assume you are in a sea of rumors on a message board. It is fun to fish around in it and guess which one will be right, but it is best to remember that 24 out of 25 rumors are all smoke and no fire. I think the fun comes from the 25th one that is right. The fact that you can be pretty sure one of the rumors has some truth to it makes it fun. Still, you are right that the bottom line is you can generally trust print media journalists and generally can't trust internet rumor twitterists.

I'm trying to remember the last time a sports journalist lost his job for getting a story wrong. I can't really remember any. Is that because sports journalists are never wrong, or that the accountability that comes with their job is severely overblown?

Well there may be some bad apples out there but I think you would agree that most "legitimate" sports journalists (not bloggers) at least have legitimate sources they base their material on. Those sources may end up being wrong, but they didn't hear ol' Billy Bob down the street talking about Josh Pastner and use that as the basis for their "report". I don't know Emig personally, but have interacted with him via twitter and he seems to be a straight shooter that is pretty conservative with his reporting.

The fact that you think that journalists are held "accountable" tells me how gullible you are.

I remember when Bob was "gone" to Florida. I also remember when Bob was "gone" to Notre Dame.

I remember when Capel was "definitely going to be at OU next year".

It takes about 3 months of reading message boards to determine who is full of crap and who really knows what they are talking about. The people who still cant get it, rely on the media for information.

Your definition of "journalist" must differ from mine. I don't recall anyone that I would consider a "journalist" saying Bob was "gone" or Capel would "definitely" be back. Perhaps you should narrow your definition and eliminate lazy halfwits like those you listen to on the Sports Urinal.

Emig is a good reporter. I've got no issues with him.

I agree with you that people should not just take person x on wildcats.com or whatever and run with it, and you won't see me doing anything close to that, but when I hear people like chewy or ouguy11 or BoulderSooner who have a demonstrated track record of getting things right before everyone else, I listen (I know you do too, not saying otherwise). That is all I am saying.

It is just a subject near and dear to my heart. I have serious issues with journalists who report things based on unnamed sources that turns out to be wrong, and they do nothing about it. I would burn those sources in two seconds, I would be so embarrassed.
