Gulley, a redshirt sophomore, has been granted his request for a transfer and will leave the Cowboys immediately, apparently upset over a lack of playing time.

Something about this story doesn't pass the smell test. Players request a transfer when their average playing time is in single digits, not 18.4 minutes per game. Gulley sat out two games with a shoulder injury, but started in 5 of the 8 games he played in. His competition at the point, Dowell and Guerrero, are averaging 19.2 mpg and 16.9 mpg respectively.

Is this another case of Ford chasing a kid off and trying to cover it up with a story that sounds good? If Gulley's departure is legit, maybe one of the OSU fans on the board can weigh in to tell us why a kid who is averaging 18.4 mpg would want to leave the program?

Newell transferred and he was getting those kind of minute too.

EDIT: My point is that some players think they deserve more time than they are getting even when they get serious playing time.

A kid getting 18.4 minutes per game being upset about playing time makes a heck of a lot more sense than a coach chasing off a rotation player in the middle of the season. If Ford needed to free up a scholarship, he would probably just run off a player who can't even crack the rotation.

Losing Franklin and Gulley are big loses for OSU because of what those guys stand for OFF the court. Gulley had some really classy things to say about OSU and his team. Seems like a great kid. I feel bad for him that he was riddled with health problems since he got on campus. I remember when OSU got him (Arkansas POY) and Dignon was on here hardly able to contain himself. :)

All good points, guys. Guess the fact that Travis has been known to cull players in the past made me a bit suspicious about Gulley's departure.

As you should be. There is a thread on OP that has outlined Ford's attrition rate and it is pretty incredible. Seems like he is doing a poor job finding kids to fit his system as this is his fourth year or that kids don't get along with he and his staff.

I expect every school to lose a kid or two each season for various reasons but Travis has lost over half his kids.

I have a feeling that Travis is eat up with what I call "the little man syndrome." He likes to use his authority as the head coach to show he's in charge.

Most small-in-stature guys I know are secure in who they are. Some I've met over the years are not. I think there's a good chance Ford may fit that description. One only has to observe his demeanor on the bench to see it.

I think the coaches should get a pass on a certain percentage but when it gets out of hand like this you have to ask whether or not its the head coach. I was critical of Capel for this exact same thing. I just don't see how you build a program when you lose half or more of your incoming recruits under less than ideal circumstances. (I think guys like Blake Griffin going to the pros is an ideal situation and should never be held against a coach.)

I really don't think Ford is going to make it at OSU. Is bizarre that Holder gave him that contract extension but won't give Gundy a contract extension.

If I were running the show, I would be thinking about a coaching change at OSU. I would also be kicking myself for giving that contract extension.

OSU could lose there next three non-conference games (at Alabama and SMU and home against Virginia Tech - these games are winnable for OSU but V Tech already beat them in Stoolwater and the other two are on the road).

When you look at the conference schedule it is tough to pencil in wins. (In fairness to OSU it is tough to pencil in wins for most teams this year.) I think you can pencil in wins for ISU and Tech at home. I think ISU and Tehc on the road are winnable. I think A&M, KSU, OU and Texas at home are winnable for OSU. I expect they will lose all the other games. If they win every game I mentioned and don't get any upsets on the road they are 8-10 in conference play. I think all six winnable games are also games they could lose. I could see them being a couple of games better or significantly worse than 8-10. This is not looking like a good year for OSU basketball. Good thing they are football school.

It makes sense for Gulley to leave now. If he waited until the season was over, he'd have just one more to play after sitting out a year. Leaving now will give him 2/3 of next season and all of his senior year wherever he ends up.

I wouldn't be shocked to see him end up at Arkansas. Anderson looked at him at Missouri and Gulley is a Fayetteville native. They're not exactly stellar at the guard spots, either.

what happened to franklin?
i think the biggest loss for them was running off ibrahima thomas. i thought that dude was going to be all big 12 type. ford likes to have no posts so he ran him off lol

1. I think Gulley leaving is more about having to compete with 3 other PGs(Guerrero, Dowell, Forte) next year for playing time.

2. The 09' class at OSU that started with 7 commitments is down to Dowell.

Newell didn't leave because of playing time. He he a cross roads with one of the asst coaches and since then, has been treated much differently than the other coaches. He may have thought he should be starting too...but the PT was not the deciding factor in his transfer.

DING, DING, DING!!! We have a winner!!!

:clap

But to be honest, this may be an OSU problem. Budke, may he rest in peace, saw the exit of 18-20 players before their eligibility was completed in his short time in Stillwater. I've never heard of any program losing that many basketball players in such a short time. No one ever questioned him about it either. Wouldn't be surprised to see that Holder and T Bone had made this a mandate!

I started out at oSu when I finished up with JUCO a long time ago becuase I still had some friends there. Stillwater is truly just a boring place to live IMHO and OU and oSu are just completely different environments [my first degree is from OU, so I may be biased, lol].

Things may have changed, but at oSu, there is literally a building called "Ag Hall" where you take the big group tests...at the front of the test taking room in Ag Hall, a huge stuffed cow, all along the walls? Cow heads. On your way in to Ag Hall? A bunch of hick looking dudes spitting dip everywhere.

Bottom Line: If you like country music, want to date the prom queen from Gotebo and live in a "town" about an hour from civilization, oSu is for you. OU was just a completely different deal...OKC 20 minutes away, a little more "city" overall. I'm shocked that anyone would consider oSu "fun" but that is just me.

I sure don't agree with this. I had a lot of good times visiting Stillwater when I was in college. I particularly liked how a lot of people walked to the bars whereas in Norman it was almost always driving because there wasn't a lot of housing near the bars.

I don't think you should be dogging on Gotebo like that! ;)

And yet Blackmon still got a DUI...

And yet Blackmon still got a DUI...

He did not get a DUI. He got a DWI in Texas which means any amount of alcohol by a minor. I suspect he answered yes when they asked if he had been drinking. Had he been drunk he would have gotten a DUI. Honestly, he got screwed by the media on that.

Furthermore, when us older guys were in college, the police pulled you over and said pour out your beer. I for one will not act like I was better behaved than the current youth because the rules simply weren't the same.
