I think the question of how good of a coach Mulkey is becomes irrelevant. She might be a good pro coach. But, the university is a learning situation, and I question anyone who values anything that she teaches. We have had national writers in the world of ESPN sports question whether she was good for basketball. She certainly is not good for women in an academic setting.
I think the Baylor endowment is actually larger than OU's. Last I saw a listing, they had about a billion more. What, exactly, does Baylor teach? The sports facilities that they have built in recent years would be such that Jerry Jones might be jealous. Yet, they have almost no credibility academically. Their entire football staff and university president had to be terminated (against the wishes of the Baylor alums) to avoid, perhaps, the death penalty due to their concealment of how many rape cases?
I really had high hopes for Mulkey after the 2005 title. Then, one of the key players left, telling of her betrayal by Kim. I think her lack of integrity has been cited in two books now by her players. It is interesting that three or four starters, including Sophia Young, returned from that team, only to suffer three straight losses to an OU team that had added a rather key player. Seasoned national champions, and they couldn't win one? Even when they fouled her while she was out of bounds without it being called intentional?
Kim is a pretty good coach. But, if she is what the future of women's college basketball is, include me out. I think women's sports survive because they are different from men's sports. The girls actually go to class, get degrees, graduate. The guys hope to go to the NFL or NBA after their rookie years. Lot of underclassmen in the draft. Not a lot are regarded highly for their academics. Women are still a little bit about college..
