Harmon makes U.S.A roster for NIKE Hoop Summit

Is Harmon more of a 2 or a 1?

Definitely a pg. He'll handle the ball and that part well from day 1. I think he will struggle scoring the ball for a couple of years at least. Better put some scorers on the court with him.

I think he's a better scorer than you are giving him credit for WTS. Nothing like Trae, but I would guess he'll average 13-16 pts/game next year. He can shoot it well from outside...and is a good penetrator!

Current number of freshman averaging between 15 and 16 ppg at the Power 5 level:

RJ Barrett (Duke)
Zion Williamson (Duke)
Romeo Langford (Indiana)
Xavier Johnson (Pitt)
Lugeuen Dort (ASU)
Coby White (UNC)

Pretty exclusive club... Sure there are a lot more at the 13-14 level though. The list I saw was only 15ppg and above, which in college basketball is a very impressive number.

I actually thought he seemed more like a scorer.

I wonder how he compares to Javon "Wink" Adams, who Lon coached at UNLV. Combo guard kinda guy.

There is zero chance he averages that much.

And go read his scouting reports. Most rave about all the other aspects of his game, but mentioned scoring, moreso from mid-range and 3, are definite areas for improvement.

The last time I watched him play, I wasn't overly impressed with his scoring. That is the main reason I've predicted he won't live up to his ranking, but I do allow for him to become a better offensive player later in his career.

That's my take.

Agreed. Harmon is a crafty, do-it-all PG/lead guard, any term you want to use will fit. He doesn’t shy away from tough competition. Denton Guyer played national powers like Damatha, Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, Sunrise Christian, Houston Eisenhower and a full slate of schools that challenged his team.

Here’s a video from his performance in the EBYL last April.

De’Vion can score in a variety of ways if need be. I posted a video of a game not long ago when Trae Young stopped by to watch him play. Trae was in Dallas for a game. I don’t remember the exact stats, but I think De’Vion scored 34 points and made four three pointers with TY in attendance. The video is available online and on that thread for anyone who might be interested. I’m too lazy to look for it again.

EDIT: Not that it matters (it’s an estimate, nothing more), but I doubt if De’Vion will average 13-16 ppg. I think it will be somewhere between 8 and 12 ppg. Depends on his teammates and what the team needs him to do. He’s not a pass first guard like JB or a shoot first guard like TY. He’s somewhere in between.

As an FYI, that observation is not meant as a comparison to either of those players.

I bet you would have also said There was a ZERO % chance that Trae would have averaged 27+ a game and like 8 assists/game and lead the nation in both too, right?!

So let's make a wager. Let's say 10 points/game is the line...I'll take the over and you can have the under.

Fair?

Players sometimes score out of necessity. DH is more skilled than you are giving him credit for!! I guess we'll see soon! For him to make a national team of 12 players...he must be decent.

He’s a do whatever is needed to win the game pg, my favorite kind.

O/U of 12 would be interesting... 10 seems too generous.

He is a true point guard and is very likely to start day 1.

If he hits the over, be ready for an argument that he only did so "technically," and that on a real Division One team, he'd be a role player at best.

You are probably right about Young, but at least he was known as an offensive juggernaut leaving HS. That was his MO. It's not with Harmon.

And lol at you making the comment that you think he'll average between 13-16 next year, then trying to bet me he'll average 10. You can't be serious?

He isn't going to average that high with Manek, Doolittle, and Reaves also playing (starting). Throw in JB who will have a year of experience over him. Even if he (Harmon) starts averaging somewhere around 15 by conference play (unlikely IMO), I'm guessing he has a lot of games early with like 5-7 points that will bring that average down. But yeah, I don't see it. He is more of an old school pg IMO. A facilitator. And by default, there will be at least 2-3 guys ahead of him on the pecking order when it comes to scoring. I will gladly show come back next and admit I was wrong if he does, but I feel pretty strongly about this. A quick glance at scoring history for freshman at OU shows how unlikely this is, IMO. Hield averaged 8. Blake Griffin only averaged 15. Hollis Price 7. There have been some that averaged more. Tisdale. Webster. Even Willie Warren. Those guys were unique, and like Young, were noted elite scorers. That's what those guys did. It isn't Harmon's strong suit. It's not his calling card. I'm not saying he sucks. I'm just saying his biggest strength isn't being a bona-fide scorer.

My son has had a couple of tourneys in the Guyer gym so I’ve been able to check out their hoops stuff. Harmon was voted the team’s defender of the year at least once and I believe twice. He was also voted the team’s MVP last year.

Wtsooner,

Yeah.... Pretty weak to claim 13-16 and then try to place an over / under at 10... In that scenario it should be 13.
