Here is how the offseason should go down

If he's not committed to hustling on every play and playing defense, then give him his walking papers. Jeff needs to take a hard stance with some of these kids and let the chips fall where they may.

Could the fact that he is playing 40 minutes a game have anything to do with that? Fatigue is hitting TMG hard! He needs a backup to spell him..

You're serious? You would sack the best freshman PG we've had in years with that kind of ultimatum? Yeah, TMG has some deficiencies, but they better work on re-recruiting his heart back to the program.

Ultimatum? Now telling a player he needs to at least attempt to play defense and that he needs to work with a D1 coach over the summer is an ultimatum? I call that an honor. And they have to re-recruit his heart?
Please.
I've been on TMG's bandwagon most the year but the more I watch him play the more I wonder. You can't have a good team in D1 if you're PG thinks shoot first and plays zero defense. I hope TMG gets it figured out over the summer.

If you cannot commit to spending the summer with my defensive coach we cannot have you back.

That's an ultimatum. When you tell a kid either do this or hit the road, you're backing him in a corner. That's almost a dare.

Now telling a player ....... he needs to work with a D1 coach over the summer is an ultimatum? I call that an honor.

I call that an NCAA violation. You of all people should know that no D1 coach can work individually with any player over the summer. The S&C guys are the only ones who can be involved in any workouts.

You can't have a good team in D1 if you're PG thinks shoot first and plays zero defense.

I admit TMG needs to improve on defense, but you're selling him short on the "shoot first" stuff. Do you not think Capel was encouraging him to take charge on offense? What other options did they have? ..... especially after WW got hurt and teams starting to shade Cade? Did you see how much teams starting putting pressure on TMG just to get the ball up court? They knew he was playing the entire 40 minutes and they were trying to tire him out because he was the key to the offense..... Have you ever tried to play defense when your legs are dead, you're gassed, and you know you're not going to get a blow?

Compare his role to what Hollis Price did his freshman year..... TMG had twice the responsibility.

Finally, do you realize how tight WW, TMG, and Tiny are? They bonded through that Team Texas AAU circuit. TMG almost went with Tiny to Oak Hill their senior year...... like WW did his junior year. WW and Tiny are big reasons why TMG went to OU in the first place...... and they don't know if they're staying.

Make no mistake, TMG is part of the solution in the future but he's part of the problem today. He's disillusioned and discouraged about how the season went down. He's wavering on what he wants to do ..... and doesn't need a push in the back as he's wavering on his future plans.

This is a kid who moved to Houston from New Orleans after Katrina displaced him. He was a 2-time Houston POY ...... everybody wanted him. He's an inner-city Houston kid..... I've refereed games his school played in not too nice areas of town.

His buddies are trying to decide if they're coming back or not. The Sooners asked him to carry the entire load at the toughest position on the court without many complementary pieces around him. The team floundered. He's discouraged and we have posters saying we need to invite him to hit the road if he doesn't improve.

I'm saying Capel may have to re-recruit him ..... show him why he shouldn't walk out the door with his buddies. Tell him he has help on the way. JC should tell him that he is committed to him and will continue to develop him as a PG. IMHO it's not the time for tough love for Tommy.

Side Note:

Do you guys realize the players read these message boards?? We're trashing these guys immediately after a disappointing end of a disppointing season. I hope this board doesn't become as negative as the "other" board did.......

Noone is questioning their talent. We are questioning their heart, their want to, their drive.
The way I see it is if we would have went out and won the big 12 these guys would be top dogs, be praised everyday for how good they played....But now that they have gone out and showed no heart they cant hear about it?

I stand by my post and I do not want anyone back that is not committed to OU and hustling. Currently the way I see it there is only a few players that should have schollies and thats cade & fitz...I know fitz had off the coart issue but when he is on the court he hustles. Can you imagine if gallon or tmg played with as much heart as cade or fitz? Think about how good we would be...

Trust me, they hear about it. The difference is they hear about it from their coaching staff and will all summer from their S&C coach, which are the only people that matter. Pipe down with the rhetoric for a while.

Listen, I don't think TMG and Tiny are great defenders by any means, but this is getting out of control. Our PG is forced to play 37+ minutes a game due to no back-up and depletion in our backcourt. When you "coached" your high school for summer ball, did you throw out the same pitcher every game for 7+ innings? No, because eventually he would break down. I'm telling you, playing 40 minutes a night in college is tough, very few can do it and I certainly don't expect players who haven't gone through ONE SUMMER OF CONDITIONING to be able to accomplish it. And then did you tell your pitcher, "well we have limited offense, so go out there and go 3-4 every night", which is applicable because we don't have one person who can create their own shot off the bounce besides TMG.

A lot of players at the HS level can score, that is why they are recruited. Only the elite are ready to play D at the Division I level, it takes time for the game to slow down. Tiny didn't have to hedge screens at Oak Hill, TMG didn't have to turn his defender coming up the floor. These are things which are necessary to be successful but haven't been grasped yet.

This team has problems, but some of you are going completely overboard right now.

Simple as this:

Gallon does nothing but run, rebound, and play defense. He visits the Griffins and stays with them while they show him how to play defense. Griffin will get practice dunking on Gallon. Maybe Fitzgerald would benefit from this too.

Willie and TMG to take a crash course in defense. Practice playing defense with hands behind the back. Learn the basic principles and footwork.

Sending these players their seperate ways this summer is NOT the way to go. This team had major chemistry issues. They need to spend as much time as possible getting better together. As bad as the individual defense was on this team the team defense was even worse. These guys need to learn to play both offense and defense together.

Capel needs to take down every rim on campus, and find wherever else every kid on this team is going to be this summer and hire someone to take down any rim on any court they may think to visit.

Texas Tech beat CU yesterday after losing to them last weekend. Pat Knight said after the game on Sunday they had a 3 hour practice and never once touched a basketball. This team needs some practices like this.
