I know this is a little off topic but I thought this would be the board where someone might know the answer.

A friend of mine and I were arguing about an Oklahoma history question for basketball.

I thought BTW went undefeated in the 94-95 season with RW, Hump, Eton, Highshaw and company. I was wrong. They went 26-1. My friend swore up and down that they lost to John Marshal, but I knew that was the following season when RW was gone.

The question is, does any know who BTW lost to that season?

Thanks in advance.

Didn't they lose to McGuinness or some smaller school in a tournament?

I may be confusing it with when McGuinness beat Millwood in 89 for the state title.

I don't remember. For some reason I was thinking it was someone from out of state or not in the Tulsa area.

I'm pretty sure they lost in a tourney in Arkansas. I was thinking for some reason it was the team from Little Rock with Joe Johnson and Jarrett Hart.

I was actually in a discussion this week with someone who was claiming this Douglass team to be the best one in state history. I countered fairly easily with BTW '95 and John Marshall '96.

I think your right.

Not the type of thread I normally comment on, but I wanted to jump in on this one.

I have seen Douglass play first hand this season. I'll also add there is no way they could have handled BTW '81-'82. They were long and explosive and Wayman was unstoppable. No way Douglass is within 10 in that game.

I am too old and been gone from the state too long to remember the '90's teams you listed.

Douglass is real talented, but they don't have a superstar like btw did or some other teams through the years. I think Douglass is poorly coached.

That's the point I was making. That John Marshall team was one of the best coached teams I've ever seen. Not to mention they had 2 very good D-1 players (Adkins and Heard) with 3 other high level athletes that played D-1 sports (Tate and Cooper-OSU FB and McDaniel-TU BB). They were deep and athletic and defended the crap out of the ball.

BTW was less well coached (JMHO) but had a higher talent level than JM. Two future NBA players (Thomas/Humphreys), one NFL player (McQuarters), and 3-4 other D-1 athletes (Hill, Tiger, Reed, and a big guy that also went to Syracuse--Greg Something).

I'd also put the McGuinness teams with Crawford, Bluitt, Amous, and Merritt above Douglass along with the '02 PCO team (SmithX3, Hayden, etc), MWC '02 (Williams, Alexander, Jones, Kemp).

It would be interesting to try and come up with a Top 10 from the last 30 years in OK. I only know of teams from about 93-10 so I'd need help with teams before since I'd only heard of them rather than seen them.

One pre-93 team would be Millwood '89 with Hopgood and Evans.

As well as Joey Mickey and Russell Allen. They were upset by McGuinness in the state finals in probably the biggest upset in the history of Oklahoma high school basketball.

Tulsa McLain had some good teams with Seals and even before Seals was in HS.

Star Spencer had some stout teams in the 70's and 80's. Southeast had some great teams with Moore in the early 80's.

In the small schools, Velma-Alma had some great teams with Kevin Rehl. And, I'm trying to think of the small school that won the Tournament of Champions in the 80's or 90's by beating one of the big school powerhouses.

OCS was good with Roberts, and as I mentioned earlier, Ardmore was really good in the late 80's/early 90's.

I can attest, Eton (Derrick @ the time) Thomas dunked on me in the state semifinals on a put back. They definitely out-athleted us, but we held it to within 8 if I remember correctly. I think they smoked MWC by about 30 in the finals. McQuarters could have beat anyone on our team in a full court sprint even if he spotted us half the court, it was ridiculous.

Finally a thread I can actually contribute to!

The '94-95 Booker T. team lost their first game of the season to Tulsa McLain.

This thread prompted me to look through some old newspaper archives online. It's weird, but as the season was going on, you didn't get the sense that that Tulsa Washington team was historically good until very late in the year. The Oklahoman didn't have a single Booker T player on their first-team preseason Blue Chip list. Even as late as January they had them ranked 8th in the state behind Midwest City, Ardmore, Owasso, Tulsa Memorial, Cascia Hall, John Marshall, and McLain. It wasn't until very late in the year that people seemed to realize just how good they were.

Which is weird, because I remember them as being the team everyone in the state knew was dominant from the beginning, but that is certainly a function of the 15 years that have passed. Memory is a funny thing.
