How do we handle WVU press coachtalk?

There is no magic formula. Pick a plan, and follow it. We have enough athletes/ball handlers that it really shouldn't be something we struggle with like we have.

Woodard struggled last time b/c of his height. Maybe use Thomas or Buddy more. Pass the ball, and avoid the easy trap areas.

Fairly simply... You can NOT get sped up... Its not VCU/WSU Havoc Press...

Run your press breakers, Bring Spangler up to relieve pressure if needed...

Buddy, Jordan and Isiah can handle that press. Nothing they havent seen before.

OU wins by 10.

Agree that we need to use the big guys so they can see over the press. They both handle it well enough. it's really about putting the pressure on the defense by being in the right spot to break the press.

Agree, against any press it's all about patience. A 5-count or a 10-count are better than live ball turnovers that lead to easy baskets.

It also helps to have bigs that can handle well enough to use against pressure. Spangler and Thomas handle well enough to help.

Why wouldn't you bring Thomas to the center of the court. He can handle the ball fairly well for a big guy, he has a solid vertical and long arms. He would be perfect to field some tough balls. Then have Spangler under the rim (offensive end) to get easy buckets. Spangler is probably the most efficient guy on the team. Run Hield to the three point line opposite of Spangler. If you get the ball to Thomas he can drive, hit Spangler for an easy bucket or hit Hield for an open three point shot with Spangler in rebounding position. Thomas should follow the pass to the rim for rebounding. If the ball goes to Spangler, Hield goes to the paint to rebound. That should leave two guys back to avoid fast breaks when OU doesn't convert. WVU should be crashing back after the press is broken so I wouldn't be overly concerned with a 3 on 2 the other way.

Hit the middle, look opposite.

You can run any variation, scheme, whatever...but it all comes back to that.

This. We must utilize Spangler and Thomas to neutralize the press. The only other thing I would add would be to limit the dribbling against the press when we can. Passing is far more effective at beating a press than trying to dribble through it.

Pass the ball side to side by anticipating the double teams, and avoiding the corners and the sidelines where WVU likes to trap. I would use Thomas as the escape valve in the middle of the court. He has good hands and above average handles for a big.

When the ball crosses the half court line, don't just breathe a sigh of relief, go on the attack and make the Mountaineers pay. Their full court pressing defense is no different than any other in that it's more vulnerable at that point than at any other time.

Because that means you have to use one of your three guards to throw the ball in. Most teams use a big. I like Thomas in that role, b/c he can get it back, and if there is room, he can bring the ball up.

Good point nike. He might due to more experience handling the ball. Did Booker play poorly at WVU? To be honest I blacked that disaster out. It's completely erased from memory.

I think booker was still kinda hurt but walker is a better ballhandler is why I said that

I think one key is if we get a lead, keep attacking the press.

I can't remember when it was, but in the last couple years, there's been a game or two where in the second half, we've stopped going for quick scores with the lead. If you get a one on one to the basket, take it!

I think sometimes the tendency to "not play at WVU's speed" will lead to our players playing TOO slow and end up getting trapped trying to slow things down. Just move the ball. Use the bigs to break the press. Spangler is a good passer.

That's what it used to be when I played in high school in the dark ages. Not sure why it wouldn't still work.

Others have said it as well - a lot of it is a plan, rehearsal, and repetition. The press can frustrate a team when they are not ready but so can a team frustrate a press when they are ready for it and consistently break it.

We have to hope that cousins comes to work tonight.

If he has the same performance tonight that he did against the pokes, it will be a long night. This team needs better ball-handlers.

I think Kruger will have Woodard and spangler doing most of the work tonight.

Apparently this is how Kruger will break the press.

Denver, your post was prophetic. Great job -- you hit the nail on the head.

That's exactly what Lon said at halftime almost word for word when interviewed on TV. He said they handled the press pretty well except when they got sped up. Good call CoachTalk. Maybe Lon reads this board? :dance005:
