What do you guys think?

Is OU going to come out swinging and at least offer what they were paying Capel? Or are they going to low-ball?

I will predict between 1.5-2.0 million. I don't think Joe will undervalue the Basketball program like he did when he hired Capel for 600k.

I think they will offer $1-1.4 million a year for an experienced coach. If they can afford to pay $2 mill to a guy who no longer coaches here then they better throw some serious cash to get a big name guy. If not, I will be pretty disappointed.

1.2-1.75 probably top out at 2 mill + perks if Joe really wants a guy

How much would it take to get a guy like BCG? I mean before his off the court troubles it would have to be $2 mill, at least. After his poor choices, maybe we can snag him for $800-$900k?

It depends on his market value. If only one school offers him, they'd likely get him for around $1 mill. I doubt teams will get into a bidding war over him. Like many are saying, if you like BCG, you'll probably like Buzz. So when one gets swooped up, offer the other.

A lot of good coaches can be had if OU pays the $1.6 they paid Capel.

Not questioning the OP, but why so much talk about salary? Joe will find the coach he wants, and he'll pay that man based on his experience/sucess.

I never saw Capel as a "cheap" hire. I simply saw him as a hire that didn't require Joe C. to break the bank in the early contract years.

No different then hiring a controller at a company. There are plenty of folks that can get the job done. You interview a bunch of people, some young, some old. Some with limited experience. Some with a lot of experience. You hire the one that you like the best, or that you think fits in the best. If its the younger, less experienced guy, you can probably get away with offering a lower salary. The opposite is true for the more experienced guy.

Ever heard the term "salary commensurate with experience?" Same thing with coaching.

When it comes down to a bidding war, OU will beat Tech outright. I don't think Tech pays much money for Mike Leach. If OU really want BCG, I don't think Tech has a chance. BCG is OU to lose period. I think it's BCG in the end if Joe C. really thinks this through. UK spent big money on BCG, now he can get him cheap. I wonder 5 years ago when Joe was looking, you all would cry out to get BCG wouldn't you?

Just wondering with all the names "popping" up, which ones may or may not be realistic monetarily. Like Tubby, OU wouldn't pay him what he gets now.

I wonder if OU pays more or if Tech pays more? I'd assume that Arkansas pays more.

Just a discussion point to see if money will be a major deciding factor. I agree with everything you said though.

If it comes down to Buzz for 1.7-2 mill/year or BCG for around $1 mill I think that is a pretty easy decision.

I am beginning to warm up to the idea of BCG. He would be the most bang for the buck. This is all moot if he has not actually cleaned up his act, however.

I think anybody expecting OU to pay up near the 2M mark for a coach especially the way the program is right now is going to be really disappointed. 1.5 also seems a bit much.

If I am correct Buzz makes in the 1.5 range at Marquette right now so I just don't think we can up his salary to make him seriously consider this job. Pastner makes something like 900K at Memphis. Of course that probably leaves another mid-major hire or BCG who we may be able to get at the 1M or a little under range.

I am however hoping that the same boosters who said Jeff needs to go "or else" are the same ones who'll graciously donate to ensure we can afford and hire a top of the line coach to bring our program back to it's rightful place.

Another (kind of dumb) question...How much do we/did we pay OUr assistants?

Pastner will get a raise when his name comes up for the OU job.

When has Joe C ever paid money for a new coach? He likes to shop at the thrift store, not sure he knows how to hire someone who is already successful. I'm hoping he goes after an experienced successful coach but I expect we'll get another cheap hire he hopes will magically turn into Bob Stoops.

i believe up to 1.5mil...

they cant go cheap this time...and i'm still not sure 1.5 can get the type of coach that we need...but with some of the names that are floating around it is possible...

Joe C. went cheap last time and his guy failed. I think Joe C. goes for a little more experience. If the boosters that wanted Capel gone could pony up a buy-out, they can pony up enough to get a decent coach.

It depends on who is offerred the job. If Terry Evans was offerred the job it would be ridiculous to give him $1.5 million per year because it simply isn't necessary to get him to take the job. If Buzz or BCG is offerred the job OU would almost have to pay that or more to get them.
