I know this much...

it's funny, i had a bit of an anti-Sampson streak in me (ok, maybe a lot those last couple seasons). most notably b/c he appeared to only settle on "his" type of players and running numerous other off.

at the time i thought his "Heart, Hustle, Hardwood" mantra was not only dated, but ridiculous in terms of motivating modern basketball players. particularly the top-flight talents that seem to guide their teams to the Final Four each year.

i thought, argued and typed that, "no blue-chipper wants to hear HHH. they dont want to dive for loose balls..." and so forth. well i think that's true to a large degree.

in turn, we got a coach whose mantra is...well i dont know what his mantra is...but we got the blue chippers who never exuded any aspect of HHH (other than BG). now i'm back on the fence after learning that the grass isnt always greener.

where's the fine line here? i dont know and i think that's why only a handful of coaches are considered the best every year. but i do know, and agree w/ the original post, that i want to see a squad of hard-working, over-achievers diving for loose balls and playing as a team. a pesky team come conference and tourney time with no fear.

When you look at the decisions some of those guys made, coming out early with very poor draft potential, it becomes evident there is not much that can be done/said/threatened, to get through to them. I know enough about what went on behind closed doors to know that there was essentially a perfect storm of attitudes and personalities. I'm glad to see that storm pass.

Exactly. TMG had one foot out the door before he even got on campus. I think Gallon was the only one who had any chance of staying but the money thing pushed him out the door. The only thing Capel is guilty of is being a poor judge of character but by all reports TMG said and did all the right things during the recruiting process. It was only when he was on campus that he realized school wasn't for him and he was gone. One bad egg can ruin the whole bunch.
