things just got too deep, too fast

IMO if we'd been in a little better shape and he hadn't endured the terrible twins in recruiting then both Capel and the program would probably be doing just fine.

Coach just doesn't have the experience or proper style for such a major reclamation project (and the damage is NOT all of his making).

I still think he can be a quality D1 coach.

D1 has a wide variety of levels of competition, from the Big South to the Big 12. Right now it doesn't seem like he belongs at this level without major help from good players and established coaches, of which he has neither. Not all his fault in either case, but enough of it is his fault that he has a lot to prove either here or at his next job. I know the "terrible twins" (who is this, TMG and WW? or Tiny?) screwed him over big time, but he's had too many failures and defections in recruiting besides them. I don't think we're a TMG away from beating Texas, Kansas or Texas A&M. We might not even be a Blake Griffin away from beating the big teams.

He's still young in the grand scheme of things, and very very low on resources right now in the areas of player talent and coaching help. Thing is, I don't know if this is the place for him to take 3-4 years straight of losing to finally figure out how to turn it around. This sucks. I still think he's a pretty good coach in certain ways, but man, this really sucks.

The low number of responses to this thread is telling but not surprising.

Whose making is it? At what point is Capel fully responsible for his own situation?

Capel is responsible for the basketball program so the current state of affairs is on him. It has certainly become apparent that he was not ready for a program and a conference of this magnitude.

Hope Joe C sees this as most of us do and moves on. If Jeff stays it won't get better, but I don't see how it could get worse.

Yes, if only Joe C. had our wisdom and insight.

why should he be? how do you know that two 5* players are going to prematurely go to the draft and not play team bball?

I don't get how people say capel doesn't take responsiblity. he has stated it many times.

You don't think this team is entirely Capel's making? I just don't get that thinking. Capel came to OU and has had a lot of time. I fully understand what has happened but Capel is responsible.

Capel admitted he thought 1 of the 2 burger boys was a 1 year player. Both were talking about being in school 1 year so he had to know it was in both of their minds.

It's all his fault. Not to mention all the players that came and either left (Early, Cannon, Neysmith, patillo, etc.) or haven't/didn't make an impact (Allen, Hardrick, Willis, etc.). His recruiting has been very poor and his coaching even worse.

He also admitted he thought wwIII was a 2 year player. Therefore he should have known he would need to replace 2 of them this year well before they left.

I bet 25% to 50% of good players think they are going pro early ( especially 6'6" & taller players) when they are 18 years old. Capel was probably confident he could/would get them to stay (wise up)!

Confident? So what?

Accountability? Look at the results.

I have watched and followed OU basketball since we beat Kansas with Wilt (Kareem) was at that game. There was always hope with OU no matter who they were playing until Jeffee. I will admit I did not like him after about half way through the first season. If he was so good why did all of those Sampson recruits not come with him?>? Perhaps they and their advisors knew more than we (joe) did about basketball. Everyone should by now know how great --not good-- blake is. He is the only reason Capel is still here and at such an inflated and overpaid salary. I have lived a few years in NC and know a little about Duke folks, that is a problem, but not his only one. I'am sure he is a very nice intelligent person, he just is not a D1 basketball coach and IMHO never will be. We may beat TT but so what! From what I see and hear his two great hopes for next year are not the answer, at least not with the current coaching staff. I will stop ranting now as I am sure Joe C will do whatever he is going to do without my input/

I feel bad for him as well. I think his biggest problem has been he's seemingly had poor assistant coaches. I've played for and been close to many a team and good assistant coaches make great teams.
