I would give Jeff the option of a new 3 year contract with OU having a $50,000 buy out, at the same salary as now or being terminated.
This would be viewed as an endorsement and allow Jeff to sell recruits on the fact that he is not on a short leash, but at the same time allow OU to continue to reassess Jeff on a year to year basis.
I know I am in the minority, at least on this board, but I think he deserves another year. Unlike most on here, I just don't think he has done a bad job (except last year). I understand the arguments to the contrary, but just don't agree.
I guess I see great potential in Jeff and think we are just going to have to live through some tough times to realize that potential. I can appreciate that many don't want to put up with any of that.
But, I lived through the Bliss years (he sucked all but one year and hadn't recruited a decent player in 2 years when he left), the tubbs years (when everyone wanted him fired because he was brain damaged and we had begun to suck and he was over the hill), the Sampson era (his style sucked and nobody wanted to watch it, couldn't get out of the first round of the NCAA, couldn't recruit NEO level players and good players didn't want to play for him). I guess what I am saying is that people are never happy. We loved bob stoops was great at first because we played with some discipline -- even though we only won 7 games and then some wanted him fired because he couldn't win the big game anymore.
I think the level headed unemotional fan (with a little grey hair) sees jeff has having been successful, considering the circumstances, in his first three years and having done about all that could be expected this year. Understands that he is a young man and this is his first big time job and has had to learn on the fly and expects that he will make some mistakes. Now, can he be unsuccessful forever -- no, but if he has us up and running by next year, then OK. If not, then we can replace him before the spring signing day and go from there.
