I know - none of us do.

But if you were in control, would pollsters (coaches poll, etc.)

1. Vote teams based on what they have done on the court

or

2. Based on what they think said teams will do in the future? (as many vote today)

Early in the year you can only look at how the team finished last year, how many good players returned, incoming freshmen, injuries, coaching changes, etc. Later, you can evaluate the record, who they have beaten, bad losses, etc.

I've always thought that preseason polls are amusing at best and can be a negative. Perception gets in the way of reality. You see that right now in that Tennessee is still ranked after losing at home to VPI and Texas. VPI isn't. Why is that?

It should be only based on performance. If you can do it, it will eventually come out. If not, there was something lacking that meant that you weren't as good as everyone thought. Basketball plays enough games to have an occasional slip up. Football really doesn't, although it is becoming more common to see one loss teams battle for a title. In baseball, you play enough that it becomes a matter of percentages---until the playoffs at which time it is about having a good day today.

But, Texas A&M is rated highly after losing to Ohio State and BYU, a team that we beat easily? Tennessee is rated highly after home losses to Texas and VPI for whom it is the only good win? Duke in the top eleven after home losses to A&M and a road loss to South Carolina? I guess that I can forgive Ohio State their three losses, but AD needs an ego checked after scheduling UConn, South Carolina, and Notre Dame.

My list of things to change is nearly infinite and growing daily.
