Interesting

Each is entitled to their own opinion. OU has a policy on honoring jersey numbers that is long established and I don't think keeping up with the Jones accomplishes much. I am definitely certain that no talent is going to sign with a school because they know that if they become great they will have their number honored/retired. That priority would be on their list at about #55--#95.

Winning and championships attracts top WBB players more than anything. Consistently winning on a national level requires a roster with a couple of difference makers and multiple other #25-#75 players.

You can develop a national contender without the above type of players but you cannot do it consistently as it requires too much improvement from too many lessor talented players too frequently to be replicated more than once or twice a decade.

Exactly my point. With most programs, it helps with recruiting if the program has shown success/consistent winning. Sharing the legacy via honoring those athletes does make a difference. At the rate its going...can't hurt.

You do not change the practice of how you honor past athletes based on the remote outside chance theer might be slight advantage in the eyes of a few to make said change. Much more evidence of impact needs to be determined before undoing a process that has functioned beautifully for 75+ years.

These honor at halftime acts are done to get fans in the door.

OU celebrates championships and we have pictures of those who won them at Lloyd Noble Arena and at the old Switzer Center. Track and Field does the same at the indoor facility. We also put their pictures on season tickets. OU is second to no one in honoring our coaches and players.

4 time 1st team all American, 3 time big 12 player of the year, over 2,000 career points and over 1,000 rebounds... Yeah Courtney was defiantly the best player ever at OU.

It's clear that OU does not "retire" jersey numbers. It appears they "honor" the athlete. I have not seen any criteria as to how they make these determinations to honor the men's basketball players, but I'm sure they have it in place. I just believe they are long overdue to "honor" the women. Any woman! Yes, most programs are strategic when they plan these events and nothing is wrong with wanting to fill seats as long as the honoree has earned the honor based on their criteria. I do believe it will help with recruiting as well. Surely there is nothing wrong or sinister in honoring those who have earned the recognition and help to continue to build legacy. They need all the help they can get with recruiting and at this point, it might be a good time to reintroduce some of their legacy players to fans and introduce them to up and coming recruits. The class of 2019 was in the 6th grade when CParis graduated from OU and kindergarten when SDales was in the FF. Unless the recruit lives in Tulsa...probably don't remember CParis. Unless their coach played with SCoale or coached with her, then they have not heard of SDales. Oh yea...that would mean they are already at OU..oops!

It's not about "keeping up with the Jones"! But if we keep using 1999 practices to run a 2016 program...we get left behind. And I believe it can be done with dignity and integrity.

OH...but I forgot. Fans, let's just be happy with what we've done in the past and forget about being at the top of the tier of teams on a CONSISTENT basis like UCONN, Stanford, et al. Let's rest on our laurels and keep the goals of the mid '90s. Boomer Sooner!

I am confused with your reference to Stacey Dales. OU honored stay in November 2014 and I suspect that Courtney will be honored in the next 2-5 years. I don't have a problem with that. Personally if you think honoring every good player that passes through OU needs to be honored then you are don't seem to understand the magnitude of OU honoring an athlete.

Moreover after Courtney and DRob the list of honorees is over if the standards are properly established. No one else is worthy. So I guess we can honor both of them the next game. Get it over and wait another decade or two until we get a worthy fourth potential candidate.

If a prospect doesn't come to OU because they do not like how we honor past players that is the kind of person we don't want on the Sooner team. Their focus is on me not on team. How you honor former players get absolutely no name on the NLI dotted line.

If a recruit or some one they know decides not to pick OU because of what they read on a message board is the kind of person we don't want on the sooner team...

Wow...did not realize that OU WBB finally got around to honoring one of the players. Haven't been to a game since 2013 otherwise I suppose I would have seen it hanging at the LNC. My bad!

Surely, you don't think I'm stating that honoring a former player is the only thing that a recruit is going to look at and the determining factor for attending OU. But at the rate recruiting is going....OU WBB needs to pull out all the bells and whistles.

I agree OU WWB needs to step up their recruiting but I just don't consider their player honoring process being awry. For certain we are not getting enough of the top quality players we need to consistently meet the stated team goals of winning conference championships and competing for the national championship. Nor do I expect us to get there until we start consistently recruiting top ten classes at least 40-70% of the time. Coaching can only do so much.

This is not a problem exclusive to WBB. Bob Stoops is experiencing it with the B12 being the weakest Power 5 conference and Lon is going to feel the same need with Spangler, Hield, Cousins, Walker, Mankin and Cole graduating this year. Unfortunately it is always a numbers game if you want to stay at the top of your sport.

Don't feel too bad. Not many Baylor fans attend many OU games at LNC.

Re-think this statement.
