I had a chance to catch the last two games of the Tournament of Champions this Thurday. It was good action in both games as Talihina played Tulsa Edison and Tulsa Washington played Muskogee.
In the Edison vs. Talihina matchup, it was a good chance to see some solid juco, small college, and mid major prospects. Edison controlled the game from tip to finish, only giving up small runs to 2A Talihina. Edison played well as a team and there were some standout players.
PG Derrick Jefferson and 2012 pg Ehron Ponds were two guards who were just too quick for the Talihina guards. Talihina did have a guard, 2011 Jordan Eaglerod who puts up good numbers on the small school level, but the quickness of Edison seemed to be too much for him.
The biggest matchup of the game was Talihina forward 6'5 2011 Taggart Lockart vs. Edison's front court of 6'3 2012 DJ Mahone and 2011 6'8 Drew Craig. Lockart tried his hardest to battle the two, but Mahone matched Lockart in stength and was quicker. Mahone played Lockart physical and the competition between the two of them almost came to a boil.
Drew Craig showed why he's a legit mid major prospect at the center position for Edison. He showed good footwork in the post with an array of post moves, he attacked the offensive glass, and he showed team leadership. He will be an absolute steal for some mid major team. Look for more mid majors to get involved in his recruitment. Edison star Steve Hamilton who was thought to be out long term due to a knee injury, actually tested the knee out and was almost cleared to play in the game.
In the finals, the matchup between Tulsa Washington and Muskogee proved to be and epic battle. I watched Muskogee earlier in the year at the Hardwood scrimmage and the team appeared very rusty. This time watching them, they looked like an oiled machine. Muskogee's calling card is defense and they put a lot of pressure on TU guards, Tyler Lockett and Korey Billbury. Adrian Webber, a 2011 player for Muskogee was solid for the Roughers along with 2011 sf, Dante Wartson. Korey Billbury also showed why he is a mid major prospect as a combo guard.
Muskogee jumped out to the early lead on BTW, until coach Shea Seals of BTW made some substitutions to change the direction. Branden Brantley, a reserve guard came in and turned the tide for BTW. 2011 6'4 sg Devante Wilson of Muskogee showed why he may be considered a State player of the Year candidate with a dazzling performance. He knocked down shot after shot from long range, a part of his game that has made strides. Down the stretch, Tulsa Washington held onto a small lead with 14 seconds left and Muskogee missed 3 three point shots down the stretch that would have extended the game into overtime. OUHoops.com top ranked prospect for 2013, Juwan Parker was named Tournament MVP with an 18pt 13rb performance.
Several area College coaches were there to take in the matchup that featured prospects mentioned above: Parker, Wilson, Wartson, Lockhart, Eaglerod, Ponds, Jefferson, Craig, Mahone, and 6'6 Phabian Glasco of BTW.
One special moment of the Tournament was Ex-Tulsa Washington head coach and OU assistant coach, Mike Mims being honored by the Tournament of Champions and being inducted into their Hall of Fame. Mims, who coached Wayman Tisdale in high school and college brought up many ex-players and assitants at Tulsa Washington including Wayman's son.
