Is Edson Avila history?

According to one of the assistant coaches today before practice. Both Juco's have finished their course work. They were told to go home for a couple of weeks and join the team when they returned from Europe.

On a related question, I wonder if the Juco transfers will stay in the new Athletic Dorm .. Headington Hall. Oftentimes, older players live off campus, but these guys will be new OU students.

i think the new dorm is for frosh and sophs only

I think that living in the dorms is mandatory for freshmen and sophs. It is optional for upper classmen.

in the old dorm is was just freshmen

Maybe so. I'm just going by what Stops said this week. He said that he was going to require fresh and sophs to live in the dorm. All of the fresh and soph basketball players moved into the dorm.

doesn't look good for him making it in per TOS... really bad news! we need inside depth in the worst way. Looks like a lot of small ball with Cam at the 4.... :facepalm

I saw that. I sure hope that it isn't true because I have serious doubts regarding Hamilton's ability to provide many (if any) quality minutes this year. I spoke with a former Jayhawk conference JUCO coach about Hamilton several months ago and let's just say the things said regarding Keshaun were not too promising...

I have a much larger sample size to work with with football recruits, but based on empirical evidence, very few JUCO guys who are "just finishing up a bit of class work" will ever make it to campus.

It is absurdly easy to qualify out of HS. To not do so means you are either severely mentally deficient or were incredibly lazy and irresponsible, and sometimes a combination of both. Both of those attributes make it unlikely a given non-qualifier will ever get their act together and qualify.

Again, this is only with regards to guys who don't qualify out of HS. Some guys are perfectly intelligent and on top of things, but are late bloomers and go to JUCO because of a lack of offers. These types of guys will mostly get their stuff done and be good to go if a D1 offer ever comes.

Yep, if what I read on another board is accurate, looks like Avila didn't fulfill his responsibilities to qualify academically.

Need I say, here we go again with a JUCO recruit who doesn't have the book smarts to make it to the D-1 level?

As most of you know, I have always been supportive of bringing in JUCO players to fill needs. But, I'm beginning to think that our coaches may be wasting their time in recruiting jucos to some extent. They continue to sign two or three every season, yet they have to know there is a very good chance that at least one will not make it in. And, even when they do, it seems to be getting harder every year to point to a player who was productive enough to be worth the effort.

I don't have any answers for this problem. I'm just expressing my frustration with what has become a huge disappointment for me the last few years. For every decent player OU has signed out of the juco ranks, I'm fairly sure I could point to at least two who didn't make it in, or they failed to contribute much to the team's success.

I cannot respond directly to Avila's eligibility come the fall but at today's, Monday, August 5, practice a member of the staff said both of the JC players would be here come the fall semester.

I specifically asked him the question will both of the JC's be here this fall and he said yes.

The thing is, this doesn't make sense. If they've completed their responsibilities, why aren't they here now? At the very least they could be getting moved in and observing practice. It makes no sense for them to be good to go, yet not on campus or in transit.

I don't think there is any talk of Hamilton not being eligible. Is HE on campus yet? If not, then I wouldn't get overly excited about Avila not being here. The worrisome thing about Avila is that he was removed from the OU roster.

Crutchfield told me three days ago that they had both completed their work and were told to go home for two weeks and be on campus when the team got back from their trip. I don't think he would have any reason to lie about it. It was just a casual conversation. Something might have changed or new information might have come in to cause a change. I don't know.

The Avila update I'm reacting to is posted on the OUInsider board. James Hale did not rule Avila out entirely. But he did say that it doesn't look like he will be playing at OU [I'm paraphrasing here]. That doesn't appear to be a promising sign.

On the other hand, if Coach Crutchfield is saying that both Juco players will be on campus soon, I think we can take that to the bank. There is no way he would say that if it wasn't true...unless, as Gary said, something has changed since then.

I would imagine they completed their responsibilities around August 2, when a lot of schools finish their summer school slate. If that were true, they would essentially have to immediately move after finals over the weekend, in order to watch one day of practice (the 5th) and then watch them leave on a plane the 6th for Europe. It's not like there will be anyone here for them to practice with the next 10 days.

In that case, they can take their time getting stuff together from respective schools, move down to Norman and be ready when the team returns to get to work.
