@DeanBlevins: ISU’s Fred Hoiberg contacted about interest in coaching #Thunder. My NBA sSource has direct knowledge contact was made months ago.

While I do not trust Dean Blevins, this would also be a leg up for us next year, so I support it.

I'm all for either Self or Hoiberg. I don't care about the Thunder and it would be great for OU.

So put this with Stoops to the Browns, Stoops to Florida, and Mike Stoops to LSU

Totally agree. No chance for Self or Hoiberg - no obvious connections with Thunder management or KD and Russ, at least that I know of.

But maybe some long-term rumors of them leaving could help OU recruiting :ez-laugh:

Fred would be an idiot to take that job. NBA coaching gigs are very high turnover positions, for most. Star player gets hurt, bad season happens, boom, fired.

Job security much higher at ISU for him, plus he is basically a God there. And he still gets to be a multi-millionaire.

Believe Hoiberg would be a solid hire, but don't think he takes it.

Recently removed from a significant operation, tough to see him moving his family to OKC, they love it in Ames.

Do you realize how rare it is for any coach, let alone one with no NBA head coaching experience, handed the reins to a championship contender?

You make one deep playoff run and, regardless of the talent, you're almost automatically placed near the top of the heap the next time a team looks to hire a retread.

Mike Brown has been fired twice in the last three years. No one likes being fired, but he's still getting about $4 mil per year through 2018, thanks to riding LeBron's coattails through 2010. Byron Scott is so obtuse that he doesn't NBA teams can win championships by shooting 3s, yet here he is in 2015, employed by yet another NBA team because he ran through a putrid Eastern Conference with Jason Kidd.

With that said, I doubt he'd take a job now for the reasons Campbest cited, nor do I think he'd be at the very top of OKC's list. If Hoiberg ever goes the NBA coaching route, I think he'll be a good one.

Self leaving KU isn't going to change KU.

Hoiberg leaving ISU would likely drop ISU down a peg or two in the Big 12.

It depends on who KU hires. UNC said the same thing when they hired Matt Doherty.

But then they got Roy Williams and won a national championship or 2. Kansas will be Kansas with or without Self. If they make a bad hire, they'll fix it quickly.

Did they contact Hoiberg while he was in the hospital recovering from heart surgery? If so, they want him pretty badly.

Rumors are that he was contacted before to gauge his interest if any and that if he left for NBA it would probably be Chicago if Thibodeau and the Bulls parted ways

In my opinion (and I certainly don't know Hoiberg) it is really about what he wants out of life more than anything else. I seriously doubt money is much of an issue for him because he has made really good money since he left ISU many years ago.

The ISU job seems like a great gig but it will never be the NBA.

Probably would do a good job in OKC with his system.

If he got fired he'd be a hot commodity back in the college ranks, don't think that should be something he worries about. You think if the Celtics fires Brad Stevens in 2 years schools won't be lining up to get him ?

I actually like the ice of Hoiberg in OKC. I think he is a good coach. I like his demeanor. It will make ISU an easier game. I see lots of positives.

Hoiberg's coaching style would fit well with this Thunder roster. Any time ISU would start to struggle scoring, they would just isolate a player up top (usually Niang) and have him go one on one to the hoop. Imagine that with Russ or KD. Plus, he draws up plays as well as any college coach I've seen. I think he'd be an excellent hire for the Thunder. Don't think they'll get him though.

Doesn't require a lot of imagination. Just watch a quarter of Thunder basketball.

I don't disagree with your thoughts overall, but the irony of the bolded statements is overwhelming.

The difference is that that was basically the Thunder's entire offense vs. one ISU used only in specialized situations.
